I have a dilema. I have a son who is not doing well in school. Why? The kid thinks it's a social occassion. I did try home education for him before but midway through the year I got pregnant and was put on 100% bedrest with many hospital stays for premature labor and the homeschool experience went down the old toilet.

It's been two years and he is not making a lot of improvements in school. He is very smart but reading does not interest him. We also have another son who has some educational issues and I would not consider home educating him. He does well in school and more than that I cannot teach him as well as his teachers can. I am not equipped to work with his learning issues as well as a Special Needs teacher can. I am not putting myself down at all. I know what I can and cannot do.

I am not worried about sibling jealousy over going to school at all. We have always treated our boys individually and believe that they understand this. There is very little, "He gets to do ____________, I want to do it or have it too" going on here.

I want to do the right thing. This time I am going to, if we do this, work with a program that offers online assistance (I know they are out there. I just need to find them) as well as textbooks. I know that child led learning can work but in this case I am not willing to do it. I want him to explore his interests as well but I also want demonstrable progress notations in his files for a time he may wish to return to school.

So my question is this. What do you, as home schooling parent, do? Do you work with a school that guides the educational process? Is that a good process for you? Talk to me, please.

Thank you so much for everything in advance.

I don't homeschool, but I am also looking into it. I spoke with a mom at my church about it and for her daughter she has joined a school called Alpine (don't know if it is national or what) and they basically provide the outline, books, consumables (papers, wriet-in pages...), and all the support. You have a monthly appointment with the counselor but you handle the work. You can also add extra curriculum. (Spelling, and extra stuff.) Also, in middle school, you can attend their school part time or just for certain subjects.

I hope you do great finding just the right opportunity for your son.

There is a huge homeschool thread somewhere on these forums. You can probably find it if you do a search.

A good place to start is to go to hslda.org. That site will provide homeschooling requirements in your state.
