Help! I want to make some homemade Pirate costumes for the family-2 sons-10 and 9 and DD -age 7 plus DH and me! pirate:

Does anyone have any suggestions for simple costumes-let me stress simple. I am not very handy w/ a needle and thread.
I know so many creative ideas come from this board, I wouls love to hear your ideas.
Thanks.

It was suggested on another thread,,, that if you can wait (sailing after Halloween) to wait and purchase a costume at Target/Walmart or wherever at 75% off on November 1st. That way you have a great costume at fraction of the price :cool1:

We sail Sept. 4th-not much time. I was at my local costume shop the other day and they are just putting out some things--but I didn't want to pay pre-Halloween prices. The waiting until after is a great idea though, for those cruising post 10/31.

I made my costume for our cruise this June and it turned out really cute and was inexpensive to put together. Sorry I don't have a pic as it was taken with my cousin's camera that was unknowingly broken.

I took an old pair of jeans and cut them off between the knees and ankle, just about capri length. Then I cut them up about 2" long all the way around about 1 1/2" apart. When I washed them, they unravelled. Then I bought a very inexpensive white peasant top, and a piece of red and white striped fabric about 2 1/2 yards in length. I folded this and wrapped it around my waist, tied on the side with the excess hanging down. Then I bought some flesh colored ribbon, about 6 feet long and poked a hole right in the middle where I pushed through the feet of a stuffed parrot bought from Hobby Lobby. I hot glued his feet on top and underneath to make sure he stayed put. I also put a bandaid on the wire feet underneath so that he didn't scratch me. Then I sat him on my shoulder and wrapped the ribbon around my body under my shirt and tied it. This worked and my parrot stayed in place all night!

A pair of sandles and a bandana tied around my head with a big hoop earring finished the outfit.

Cost:
jeans - already had
fabric - $4 from Wal-mart
ribbon $3 from Wal-Mart
parrot - $4 from Hobby Lobby
peasant shirt - Bought mine off of e-bay but have seen them for about $9 at Wal-mart
sandles, bandana and earring - already had

Total - $20 and people stopped me to tell me how cute my outfit was! Maybe you can adapt these ideas to suit your needs.

That sounds like a great costume and easy enough-even for me!

Any red fabric (stripes or polka dots) tied as head bandanas or waist bands would work great. I don't think pirates bother with hems.

Cheap Mardi Gras beads to wear around the neck for women and girls along with any old bright skirt. Cut it off and let it unravel, if possible. Fabric tied around the waist with a contasting fabric "skirt" would work too. Try the clearance tables at a local fabric store.

For eyepatches, just buy black felt. Cut it into an oval and punch small holes for a string to tie around the head.

Red tights with stripes made by loose rings of first aid tape are cute.

Add a costume store pirate hat and a homemade cardboard sword and you are ready for any pirate battle. Eyebrow pencil can black out teeth, but this won't last through dinner.

Have fun!! pirate:

I'm found some red shorts on clearance for my DD's. I figure those with a white shirt (pheasnt if I can find cheap ones before the cruise - t-shirts if not) and a black belt (of vest if I can make one cheap enough). Does this sound at least a little pirate like? I'll get some beads too and perhaps an eye patch. We get a bandana onboard that will complete the outfit.

We too went the route of old jeans: baggy, cut off, frayed at the legs, patched and torn in places. For tops we took white t-shirts and tore the hem out of the sleeves and shredded the sleeves and hem. We tore the neck out also then slit it down the front a few inches and poked holes along the slit to lace it up. A fabric sash, big hoop earrings, a fishnet scarf tied around our heads and flip-flops for shoes were the accessories. All in all most everything was laying around the house and I spent no more than a few hours putting together outfits for three.
