Hollywood and Vine or Cape May Cafe? (Breakfast)

Our family will be going to Disney this July. We cannot decide between Cape May Cafe (Beach Resort) or Hollywood and Vine (Hollywood Studios for Breakfast. If you have been to either we would welcome your analysis. We have a few objectives/concerns
1. We are worried about getting to Cape May Cafe. How long does it take to get there from Hollywood Studios? (Walking or Boat). How much time should be planned with an 8 and 9 year old.
2. We also want to be able to ride Toy Story Mania. We know this fills up quickly. Which place gives us a better chance to secure a fastpass?
3. We are looking forward to a character experience. Which place provides a better experience?

Well, my answer would solely be based on which characters you want to see. At H & V, you have Playhouse Disney characters (I think Little Einsteins and Jo Jo's circus). However, we are not into PD (no kids) so don't quote me on who is there. At CMC we saw Minnie, Goofy, and Pluto in their beach attire. For us, we'd choose CMC because those are the characters I would want to meet.

To get to DHS from CMC and vice versa, you can either take a boat or walk. Neither are extremely fast, but I'd say about 20 minutes walking would be your "fastest" option. (Reminder that I don't have kids yet, so I am not sure what the average walking speed for 8 and 9 year olds is.) The problem with the boat is that you stop first at the Swan and Dolphin, then at the Boardwalk, then you go to Y & B Club. If you take the boat, you can always get off at the first stop (S/D) and then walk across the bridge to the Beach Club.

As far as TSM goes, I would assume that H & V gives you the advantage for the FP as you are already in the park. However, you could always make a later ADR for Cape May Cafe and first go to DHS, do rope drop, hit TSM, get FPs and then head to CMC at 10-10:30.

I think you can make your plan fit for either restaurant, but first decide which breakfast you really want to eat. Good luck! - AND WELCOME TO THE DIS!!!
