I got an Evite for a holiday party I don't want to attend. I don't have a lot in common with the other folks invited and don't feel like making small talk to pass the time for 3 hours. I just don't want to go. Of course, since it's an Evite, there is that little space you are supposed to write in when you respond yes or no. I hate to just say no with no explanation. But "I just don't want to hang out with you guys" doesn't really seem like the best response! ;)

What have you all written when checking that "no" box when you had no reason other than you just didn't want to go?

"Sorry I can't attend but thanks for the invite".

The last Christmas party at work, before I lost my job, I didn't attend. I had the "excuse" that it was my Dad's birthday and we were taking him out for dinner. We could have taken him out another night but I really didn't want to go so was happy for the excuse not to!!

Yup, that's all you need. You don't owe anyone an explanation, even your neighbor. If they are boorish enough to try to press for one, just keep repeating the above.

What do you say when it's you next door neighbor??? So don't want to go!!

I would say I'm sorry we can't attend, but thanks for thinking of us. Then I'd just go out to dinner that night or something.

I usually say "I have another commitment".

They don't need to know that you are committed to staying home watching TV.;)
