Things are not looking too well here. Our trip is only 22 days out and I'm not sure DH will be well enough to travel. We have never had to cancel a trip, so I never really paid too much attention to the holding spiel. Can someone please explain it to me in simple terms? My points are borrowed, I think all 240 of them, does that make a difference? I understand that we should cancel as soon as possible, but he's holding onto the dream that maybe we will still be able to go if he can overcome this rough patch he's going through. What is the latest I can cancel if I must?

Sorry to hear that DH is not well. That's a bummer.

I'm a new member, but I just got through reading the "rules." It sounds like the penalty is the same whether you cancel 30 days or 1 day before your trip. The points go into holding and you must use it by the end of the use year that you borrowed them into. Borrowing is permanant, so you would have to use those points by the end of the current use year. You can make a new reservation, but it has to be within 60 days or less of check in. I don't know how your DH is feeling, but I probably wouldn't cancel until maybe a week or a few days before, in case he really is feeling up to it. Seems distressed points are sort of hard to use.

Good luck to you.

You could try putting the reservation up on the for rent board if it's less than 30 days out, that way someone could maybe use them and you could generate some cash if you won't be able to use the points by the end of your use year. I think the closer you get to your trip date the less of a booking window you get if you were to try and reschedule before the end of your use year... ( I could be wrong though - try call MS to clarify if there is a booking window limitation for the reschedule) Good luck and hope your DH feels better soon!
