Holding points question

Hi, my waitlist for 3 nights at the poly came through for oct31- nov3 on Friday. I had booked at pop century for my 10 nights but was hoping to switch for my last few nights. I am glad it came through but have been thinking all weekend if I really want to switch. I think I want to cancel poly but my 30 days is today so my points would go into holding. I do have trip to Aulani booked in February. So my question is if I do cancel Poly and points go into holding will they be used for my February trip. Would I have to call and apply them to that trip?
I am really torn, I love the poly and the last 3 nights would great there but I have extended family at pop. Thanks for any help.

You would have to call into member services and reallocate the points from holding but it shouldn't be a problem, as long as your Aulani booking was within the 7 month window. And, you have to watch your use year. If your holding points expire before your Aulani trip, that would be a problem.

But, I would call into member service and have them cancel the reservation and then move the pts. You would hate to cancel it and then you are unable to move them for some crazy reason.

No. The above is terrible advice. Holding points can’t be reallocated. You have to book with them for reservations in 60 days or less. You’ll only be able to reallocate if the room category is still available for booking; essentially cancelling and rebooking those days within the 60 day window.

No, I'm pretty sure holding points can be reallocated to a current reservation as long as it's in this use year, but you'll want to call in. If your original Aulani reservation was made inside the 7 month window then it shouldn't be a problem. Did you use Aulani pts and book this outside the 7 month window? But, if DVC does make you use them in the 60 day window, hopefully Aulani has availability in your category at the 60 day mark. Probably the only resort that would have that ability. But, definitely call in, DVC has moved a small amount of holding points for my sister and might work with you. Just depends on the amount.

That would defeat the entire purpose of holding status.

YES Supersnoop you CAN call and reallocate the points as long as the reservation you want to use them for is within the preceding 60 day window.. If the reservation is not within the 60 day window just wait till you are inside of the 60 day window. I just did this last week with my holding points. I have an existing Nov reservation and i was able to have them reallocate without canceling the Nov reservation. I have done this before as well. So the OP will have to wait till Dec to call and reallocate the points. Disney will reallocated any amount of holding points for you weather its 10 points or 610 points. No they will can cancel your original reservation they simply swap out the other points for the holding ones. So there is no worry about loosing the room or wondering if the same room will still be available for you to rebook.

I agree with @supersnoop. Here it says TWICE that they can be used for NEW reservations.

The type of use described above seems more CM error.
No you can reallocate the points. I have done it several times. Its not CM error its how the system works. I just called last Monday and asked to have it done. No questions asked. If you are trying to do it yourself without calling MS then YES you would have to make a new reservation to use the holding points. But by calling MS they can and will switch out the points for you.

Sure & someone a while ago had a thread indicating he was having MS reallocate from one contact to another (different resorts) totally circumventing the 11 month window, many times.

I’m not questioning that you have been able to do it. I’m questioning that it should be done. Not according to that FAQ.

Just call and ask MS about how it works they will explain it to you. :)

Thanks for all the advice, I will call member services. It sounds like I could get conflicting answers but I will see what they have to say. If I have to keep my poly reservation it wouldn’t be so bad. I would like to stay there. I just need to be more on top of my waitlists next time and make quicker decisions. I didn’t think it would come through at all.

In the past year or two they've been very lenient in reallocations. It used to not be possible, then it was in the past couple of years and now per reports they've tightened up again.

I am so confused I thought holding points had to be used within a 60 day window? so what would be the difference if its re allocated as long as its within the 60 day window?

Points go into holding when you cancel with short notice. The purpose of the 60 day window, as I understand it, is to force you to use the points for a short-notice reservation. Reallocating those points to an existing reservation doesn’t consume last-minute availability.

You are doing a last minute cancellation so then the restriction is that to use the points you have to book a last minute trip.

You are potentially leaving a room that will go unused that otherwise might have been booked by someone at 7 months or some other time further out but couldn't because you held that room. So the small penalty that allows you to cancel and still keep the points is that you have to book a room that nobody else has booked or that someone has cancelled much closer to the new stay you want to make.

If they would just reallocate to any existing reservation once you hit the 60 day window there would be no penalty at all for last minute cancellations. Owners could keep reservations up until the day prior to check in and cancel leaving no time for someone else to plan a trip to use that room. As it is it's quite good that there are no fees associated with cancelling (or bookings).
