Holding points and use year dilemma

I have 2023 Feb points and might be taking a trip down in April. It might get cancelled within the 30 days and the points go into holding. We definitely will plan a trip in Feb. 2024 that we hope not to have any problem.

Should I use the 2024 points for this April trip so that if it gets cancelled the holding points go back into 2024´s use year and I´ll be able to use them for the Feb trip by moving them around or something? I´m trying to figure out how to plan this without losing the points in holding. I don´t see us making another trip in 2023.

I don’t think you can use Feb. 2024 points to book a trip for April 2023 unless you borrow them into 2023 & if you cancel they’ll stay in your 2023 use year since banking & borrowing are final transactions & you cannot unborrow them & if you cancel at less than 30 days they’ll go into holding no matter what use year they originally were.

I agree, if you borrow points from your 2024 UY into your 2023 UY then the points will remain in your 2023 should you decide to cancel, they will not return to your 2024 UY.

Holding points expire the UY they were used.

Plus when you borrow points they also stay in the UY they are moved so no matter which point you use for an April 2023 trip..if you cancel less tha. 31 days out…which you may already be..those points will need to be used by January 31st, 2024 and for trips booked 60 days or less from check in.

Thanks everyone, I forgot about the borrowing rule. I´ll just have to hope the trip doesn´t get cancelled.
