I've got a dilemma. I've been planning a family trip and unfortunately, my mom hasn't been well (melanoma). I've used all my points plus transferred and rented from other owners to get enough pts for a 2 bdrm and a studio (460 pts) during the Pres Wkend. But my mom isn't sure if she will feel up to the trip. She's been doing pretty well; her reaction to the meds has been more discomfort than really sick but she wants to wait and see. I've already paid for everything and we've really stretched our budget for this - normally we don't fly and we don't stay over weekends, but my dad was going contribute. Now I'm trying to figure out what my risk is if I have to cancel within 30 days.

From my understanding, if I cancel within 30 days, the pts go into a holding account. Then I can only book a trip 60 days or less from arrival date until my pts expire.

I'm hoping that they come and I'm even willing to absorb the expense if I have to, but I'm hoping that I could try to rent out the pts to a last minute traveler. This could work, right?

I really really want my parents to be able to come with us but it would drive me crazy to have my family of four staying in a two bdrm over the weekend when we would really rather be visiting our friends about an hour north (our usual weekend place to stay.)

Your understanding is correct. If you cancel at 30 days or less they go into holding. All the points will expire at the end of your Use Year. You can use them to book trips 60 days or less from check-in. Also, keep in mind that you can't make non-DVC reservations during the last 60 days of your Use Year.
