Im looking at making an offer on a contract but all of the current points are in "hold Status". What exactly is "Hold Status" and how does that differ from "Reservation Status?"

Can these points be used? I assume there is some sort of limitation to these points.

Holding Account information from the member website:
Holding Account
Read about how to use Vacation Points from a previously changed reservation.
Any time you change or cancel a Disney Vacation Club® Resort reservation 30 days to one day before your scheduled arrival date, the Vacation Points used for that reservation are put into a Holding Account.

What you need to know about using Holding Account Vacation Points:

You can use these Vacation Points for a new Disney Vacation Club Resort reservation during your current Use Year as long as you book the reservation 60 or less days before the new check-in date.

  • These Vacation Points can be used for an exchange during your current Use Year in two ways:
    • For The Disney Collection (except Disneyland® Resort hotels in California), Concierge Collection or Adventurer Collection if you're making the reservation more than 4 months before the end of your Use Year for a check-in date that is 60 or less days away.
    • For Disneyland Resort hotels in California and the World Passport Collection as long as the reservation is booked 60 or less days before the new check-in date.
  • These Vacation Points cannot be banked or borrowed.
  • These Vacation Points must be used to complete travel by the end of the Use Year or they will expire.

Points in hold status are very difficult to use. If I were making an offer on a contract that had them, I would consider them of no value and make my offer accordingly. (Note that they expire at the end of the use year).

Same thing for reservation points. Those were used to make a non-DVC reservation and cannot now be used to make a DVC resort reservation or for a trade via RCI. They would have to be used for something like a stay at the GF or the Poly or a cruise on DC. If you found you could use them, you'd still have to pay another $95 fee to make the new non-DVC reservation. It would be hard to use them all without sending more "regular" points after them. So no value to me or at best, only $3-$5 per point. (These also expire at the end of the use year).

HTH.

i got a contract with points in holding i had to do a split stay to get a whole week at the end of may, but i did get to use them.

I agree with Carol.

Yes, both types of points can be used subject to significant restrictions -- but for the purpose of evaluating a contract to purchase, they would be zero value to me.
