About W.I.S.H

Within the DISboards, there is a group of DISers that like to talk about getting healthy or staying healthy, and all of the things that entails. They are called W.I.S.Hers. On this thread, TXBelle (Heather) shares the history of W.I.S.H. and how it all began.

You are always welcome to post on the W.I.S.H boards and ask questions, or to offer advice for someone else. Once you've posted, you are automatically a member of W.I.S.H!

Within W.I.S.H there are smaller teams of about 20 people each. You do not have to be on a team to be a member of W.I.S.H and you do not have to be a member of W.I.S.H to be on a team. They are just a way for smaller groups of people to get to know each other and to offer more personalized advice and suggestions.

How can I join a team?

Simply find the team you are intersted in (this post is a good starting place) and start posting. Introduce yourself and join right in.

About the Rebels

On February 7, 2009, windwalker asked for a volunteer to lead a new team he named Rebel Alliance. It didn't appear that there were many people eager to take on that job! Soon however, Suzann and scoolover (Scott) stepped up and offered to share the duties of heading up the new team. Back then, every team member had to announce their monthly miles and minutes and the team captain kept a team total.

Before long the team had 11 members and by June we were up to 14. One of the latest monthly threads was started in July of 2009 by Suzann until K80K (Katie) started one in September of that same year. October was skipped and a November thread was started by wdwprincess (Jane). By this time, most members of the team had drifted away. "Real life" got in the way, training slowed down, there was an injury... For whatever reason, it appeared that the Rebels had disbanded.

In January of 2010, deekaypee (Debra) started asking for opinions for the new year and scoolover (Scott) offered to re-start the Rebels. He started a thread asking if any past team members were interested in coming back, and a few did. Then jmasgat (Maura) started filling the team in with brand new people who were either new to W.I.S.H or were ready to join a team. The numbers rose quickly and before long the team had 20 members.

For personal reasons, scoolover (Scott) asked disney_mommy (Andrea) to take over as team captain in February 2010. She accepted and the team is in its current state.

Andrea,

Thanks for the new thread!!!

Liam- Did the race kill you? Haven't heard a report yet!

AFM- I'm on cross training only right now :sad2: After my thanksgiving turkey trot I have had some bad medial posterior shin pain. After talking with the PTs at my clinic we have diagnosed it as posterior compartment "issues". I have been riding the stationary bike this week. A little sad but seeing how walking from my car to the house is a challenge I'm learning to deal with it.

I hope everyone else out there is doing great!! Stay injury free!

Andrea - Thanks for the new thread. Any chance of adding me to the roster eventually?:):confused3

Nikki - Sorry about the posterior compartment issues. I have been on the bike this week also with a hamstring pull. Hopefully we are both back up and running soon.

Mike

I did a spinning class today, it was more fun than I was expecting. It also used muscles I did not know I had. But it didn't bother my hamstring any.

Mike

Mike- sorry about the hamstring! I'm glad you liked spinning....I have yet to try it and am hesitant...not to mention I don't feel like paying for the class.

AFM- I did good on the bike last week. Used the treadmill on Monday at work and felt good after that, I only had a little bit of soreness throughout the day. Came down sick with something last night and have been battling it today! Stayed home from work. I think my fever is finally gone, now I'm just dealing with an unsettled stomach.

Can't wait to hear how you are all doing! The January races are getting so close!!!

I've been away from the boards for a while, but I'm back!...

and running the Disney World half in Jan 2011...Mini Marathon in Indy in May 2011...and probably the Disney Land half in Sept 2011!

nkkilala - Looks like we're both in Michigan!

How's your training going with all this cold weather? I've been running on the treadmill...too cold for me! What part of MI are you from? I'm near Flint.

I live on the western side of MI in Portage, which is just south of Kalamazoo! I have been injured since Thanksgiving and am currently just getting back into walking outside. I plan to be outside as much as feasibly possible! I had a hard time a year ago transitioning from the TM to the road and don't want to have to deal with that at Disney.

So great to meet you!

Hi Michelle! Welcome back to our group.

Nikki, the key to your first spinning class is that when the instructor says to increase the resistance, you should reach down to the knob, but it's up to you how far you actually turn it. I have a YMCA membership, so the class does not cost any extra. Hamstring seems better, ran 5 miles yesterday and saw 2 deer in the park. Going to wait until January to do anything fast. Did a spin class today again, it definately uses different muscles.

Sitting on my but now watching Army - Navy.

Mike

Hi Guys,

A very belated run report from the Hellrunner.

At the time of the race the UK was experiencing unusually cold weather. I've done this race several times and this was by far the coldest. The temperature was registering about 2 degrees centigrade (about 36F) as we arrived. For those who don't know, the Hellrunner is a trail run of about 10 miles with a few unusual features. Apart from the ankle deep pools on the trail, the main obstacles are the Bog of Doom and the Lake of Despair. The bog is a 100 yard long ditch filled with waist deep liquid mud and the lake is a 30 yard wide deep pool which although not as muddy is deeper than the bog.

The entrance to the bog

The bog itself. Yes, there's ice on it

It was very cold waiting to start even though I was wearing an extra thermal layer under my winter running top and woolly hat and gloves. However once we got going we soon warmed up. As we ran through some of the shallow pools on the trail I realised how cold the water was and we all started to anticipate the obstacles to come.

The bog is about seven miles in and luckily we were well warmed up. As we plunged in, it was so cold that everyone was in shock and I started making involuntary moaning noises. It seemed to be deeper than before, almost up to my neck. One of us is only about 5'5" so we formed a human chain supporting him as we waded through. And it stank.

I'm on the right with my short friend on the left

My top is luminous yellow, not black as it looks here.

As we staggered out I felt almost completely numb and I was stumbling up the next hill like a drunken old man. I had almost begun to warm up when we plunged down a steep bank to the lake. As we waded across, only chest deep this time, my friend found an A4-sized piece of ice, about half an inch thick floating on the surface so I smashed it over my head. We were all beginning to giggle with the insanity of what we were doing.

Luckily it was only a couple of miles after that to the end so we were able to warm up slightly before we finished. We grabbed our bags and headed to the car. Because we were soaked and smelly, we tried to change outside the car. Big mistake, after two minutes we were all borderline hypothermic, shaking uncontrollably and almost unable to dress ourselves. It was a good 10 minutes before we began to feel our toes.

It is by far the stupidest running I have ever done. And it was brilliant.

Hi Rebels, hope everyone is just busy with Christmas preps and nothing is wrong. I am guessing this is the last long run for the Marathon weekend folks before starting their tapers. Be careful running on a treadmill to watch for dehydration. We ran 10 miles today on the treadmill. It was on Rose's training plan for Princess. I drank an entire water bottle and did not feel bad. Got home and found out I had lost #3. The dry inside air really sucks the water out of you.

Tuesday we leave for Christmas in the World:yay::woohoo: Seems strange to be going someplace without a race, but I will definately take advantage of the warmer weather to get some outdoor runs in.

Have a good weekend!

Mike

Liam- that race sounds crazy! Glad you made it through ok!

Mike- I have been busy with finishing school and various Christmas activities. I am glad to have a few weeks off from studying and to really focus on training. I have my 10 miler next week, chrismas day actually! I'm excited and nervous for Disney!

Merry Christmas everyone! I'll try to be better about checking in!

Nicki hope the semester finished up good for you. Hope your Christmas 10 miler went well.

I ran a 6 miler Christmas day at Disney and another 4 miler. It was fun to run with just a tshirt and shorts again.

I ran my 10 miler on Christmas Eve (in the afternoon)...did great until 8.5 miles when my knees started hurting. I took the next 3 days off icing them and taking Motrin. I felt good yesterday so I headed to the gym for a short 3 miler, but knees starting aching again by 2.5 miles. This has me worried. I plan on not running again until the race, icing the knees and hoping it's enough for them to feel fresh on race day!

I'm so excited I've starting packing already!

I told my mom the other day that I wanted to run the half in Disneyland in Sept and she told me today that she wants to do it, too! I'm so excited I've inspired her to do this!

Hi Rebels,

I've just found out that my friend who was accompanying me to WDW for the marathon weekend has pulled out at the last minute. This leaves me with five days in the world on my own. Hopefully this will give me plenty of opportunities to make lots of new friends. I'll be coming along to the meets at Pop and the boardwalk and will be looking out for other disers to say hi to.

I'm staying in BCV, can't wait to get there.

See you all soon,

Liam

Mike- How cool to be in Disney for Christmas! I have always wanted to do it but fear the crowds! I'm sure I'll make it there one day.

deleckidesign- I hope the knees feel better soon! Having never done a 1/2 before I really can't offer any advice!

Liam- Sorry your friend pulled out at such a last minute! Nothing like making new friends and exploring the world on your own!

AFM- I've been doing good! Got in 30 minutes Monday and 40 minutes tonight. Feeling pretty good, however recent mileage has been on the treadmill due to weather. I hope that doesn't affect me too much! I leave for the World 1 week from today!!! So excited!

Anyone going to the meet ups?

Thanks Nikki,

I'm really looking forward to the trip but worry that touring the parks on my own will not be as much fun as with my family. Hopefully I'll meet some new friends as you say.

Let me know if you're going to any meets and I'll try and look out for you. Always nice to meet in the flesh someone you've only met virtually.

Liam

Liam,

I plan on going to the Pop meet. I don't think I can make any others. I wanted to do the Monday Breakfast however, I got offered an opportunity to tour the Disney Dream before its Maiden voyage and will be over at the port that day.

Nicki Let me know about the Dream, DW and I were thinking about doing a cruise next year for vacation.

Liam Hope you have a good trip solo, I saw you found the solo trip thread. I think you will like BCV. If you decide you want Ice Cream I would walk over to Swan (or maybe Dolphin) they have a better Ice Cream shop and good Sushi place. I like the Martha's Vineyard lounge in BCV and the lounge in YC. If you are not on a dining plan you can get food in the lounges also.

deleckidesign Hope the knee feels better. remember RICE. Rest Ice Compression Elevation. I'd plan out a walk run ratio that has you finishing just ahead of the sweepers, and then if your knee feels good you can cut back the walking a little bit. You have 10 days, so I hope it heals on you.

DW and I ran 12 today, it was on her training plan for Princess. We ran it at a faster pace than either of her halfs last year, so she should be ready for a good race. I am going down to cheer.

Happy New Year
