I don't understand how any one can not know there is an amimal or child in there car.

If the child is in a car seat it is very visible. And the same with a dog. When I get in my car /van every day I look inside the windows and when I get out I look inside the windows. Do not believe that this can happen.

Sorry they all deserve to be punished.. Those kind of accidents don't just happen.

Why do you look inside the windows when you get out? I understand looking in them before getting in, just not when getting out.

Those kinds of accidents do "just happen" which is why they are called ACCIDENTS.

I disagree... that's exactly what an accident is...something that no one expected to happen..

My friends mom was backing out of her driveway after kissing the kids goodbye (inside the house). She didn't see her 18m old son run out to the car, and she backed over him. Saw her husband run out after flailing his arms, and she drove forward to see what he was running after her for.
That is a HORRIBLE accident. You think punishing them will make them pay for their negligent behavior? Her son lived. Mind you, he is disfigured and developmentally delayed, but she punishes herself more every day than any one of us could..
Not everyone follows your rule of checking the backseat through the windows. Even if she did, and the dog is asleep on the back floorboard, how would she know if she wasn't told?

actually, we have two suv's and when my girls were in the infant seats, if it was behind you they were not clearly visible, you would have to turn around to see them.

This is a tragic accident! This lady and her husband will have to live with this for the rest of their lives. Nothing, in the way of charges, should be brought against them.

But, this was a tragic accident caused by lack of communication, not neglect. She didn't know the dog was in the car. She shouldn't be punished.

Thus on anonymous boards such as this. These poor people lost their 16 year old dog in an accident, by leaving the dog in the back of a car. Before the internet it may have been a local sensation for a day, then quickly forgotten. Those who knew the people would quickly realize the truth of the matter and there would be no loss of reputation or occupation.

Now, however, these poor people are being tossed around the anonymous Internet, subject to the outrage and condemnation of anonymous posters. Yesterday, only a few people knew these peoples names. Today, due to the wonder of the Internet, thousands will know their names before this day is over. Many of those thousands will mentally condemn these people for being careless, etc. This story will be copied and pasted to other message boards.

Why were these people’s story brought before this anonymous crowd by an anonymous poster? We have no idea. All we know is that someone unknown has brought forth these peoples names for us to consider, asking “hmm’, what do we think should be ‘done’ to these people.

It is, in many ways, just as frightening as what used to happen to those people of Venice of years long ago.

I've been driving for over 25 years. I can honestly tell you that I never look through my windows prior to getting in or after getting out. Why would I? Plus, the back windows of my SUV are rather darkly tinted. I could easily miss a dog if he was lying down or in the wayback.

You can tell me as a parent, that you would not know your child was in the car seat.

If I didn't put the infant in a car seat and she didn't make noise, I would not know that she was there. How could I?

If I understand your post correctly, you agree that she shouldn't be punished but are suggesting that she would call for punishment of someone else in the same circumstances.

If this is truly what you are arguing, I think that you are attributing to her an attitude that hasn't been proven.

Sorry, I don't have a case of OCD that requires that I look inside the back windows of my van before entering and exiting my vehicle. Do you think they were trying to kill their 16 year old blind dog by trapping it in a hot vehicle? We once left #3 in the van for 20 minutes, accidently. She was new, DH thought I grabbed the carseat, I thought he grabbed the carseat. When I asked him if she was in the bassinet, we soon realized than neither one of us had taken the carseat out.

What do you mean what should happen? Nothing. It was a tragic mistake, but certainly not a crime or neglect.

What SHOULD happen? Well, her employer should continue to stand behind her--but they should not have to because no one should be attacking her. She and her husband should receive lots of compassion and support from friends, family and the community at large as they deal with the grief and guilt they must feel over this tragic accident.

Nothing. It sounds like she's heartbroken about what happened. She said she didn't know he was in the car. I'm not sure why she would lie about that. It appears to have been an accident.

It was an accident on her part but her husband was a complete idiot to not say anything to her about the fact that he put the dog in the car. That's why I think he should be charged with negligence/neglect.

You're wrong. And this is the exact kind of thinking that causes these accidents to happen.

I would never in my wildest dreams imagine that I would leave my child in the car, but I know everyone makes mistakes, everyone gets busy and stressed and doesn't think clearly, therefore I always make it a point to check the back seat every single time I get out of my car. My son is six now and it's extremely doubtful he could be left in a car without my knowing it at his age (especially since he doesn't fall asleep in cars), but still I check. I check because I know these things happen to normal people, not monsters.

I am also a huge animal lover, and if it was on purpose I'd usually go nuts and demand them to be tried as a murder. However, in this case I'd have to say to let the lady off with a warning. It sounds as if it was just some sort of horrid accident.
