Supposedly on the special 10 day disney cruise over christmas I was on we hit a big whale, all the upper lobbys that had doors leading outside stuck very bad..just curious if this happens often and what they do about it?

There are whales in every ocean, not just the arctic, and it is possible that a cruise ship could hit a whale. Whales "sleep" by floating at the surface so they can still breathe. This time of year humpbacks and some other species of whales are migrating from the north atlantic to the warmer waters of the caribbean where they mate and give birth.

How very sad :guilty:

Would They Not Pick something like this up on The Radar System They use??

Just got off the Disney Magic a couple of weeks ago. The servers and cruise staff say "Whoa, we just hit a whale" as a joke when the boat hits a big wave.

Hygeine99 - I would think so. I would hope so! I've heard of freighter ships hitting whales, but never cruise ships. Anything is possible though...

Let's hope it was just a wave like jwann said!

There is post somewhere on this board talking about such an incident a few months ago. I think it was in Hawaii.

Hitting a whale with a 80,000 ship would have no effect. It would be like hitting a cat with your car. There is no possible way that an event like that would cause doors (hatches) to stick.

I recently read about a whale getting impaled on the bow of a ship, but I think it was a Carnival line. They had no idea until they docked a few days later.

Yeah - but do ship captains actually swerve the ship to take out the whale? :-)

(It's a joke folks. Please don't flame me. I have - and love - several house cats.)

It didnt get started from hitting a big wave...it got started because all of the 9th and 10th decks smelled SO BAD. and somebody saw blood on the bow of the ship the next day..I didnt feel anything like a big wave before..

I definitely recall seeing stories of a recent "whale impalement" on this board. I think this is what they were referring to:

Whale impaled by cruise ship
WebPosted Sep 27 2004 09:11 AM ADT

SAINT JOHN — Passengers aboard the Jewel of the Seas faced an ugly sight on arrival in Saint John Sunday – a dead whale impaled on the cruise ship's bow. It was not known if the 20-metre finback whale was alive or dead when the ship struck it somewhere between Quebec City and the Bay of Fundy.

New Yorker Dennis Buck said passengers didn't find out about the whale until they arrived in port and saw the animal for themselves. Laurie Murison, of the Grand Manan Whale and Seabird Research Station, said because finbacks can stretch 35 metres and longer, they often fall victim to ship collisions.

Smelling all the way on deck 9/10.. this story seems a bit fishy to me.... :rolleyes1 Could not resist.....

That's one HUGE whale to splatter onto deck 9 and 10. They think the whale the jewel hit was dead before they hit it.

It didnt splatter onto deck 9 and 10..where did you get that? lol..i just sayed you could smell it.

And this isnt some sick joke, I personally didnt see anything but heard from people who did..but the smell was TERRIBLE!

I was on the Christmas cruise and also felt the bump that night. But believe me it wasn't a whale. Even asked one of the senior crew officials about it and he just laughed. Message boards are great for starting rumors but the whale story is just that...a story. :cool1:

I didnt say anything about feeling a bump? I sayed it stunk..im not starting rumors, im just trying to find answers..where did the smell come from? When did I say anything about a bump..if we hit a whale it probably wouldnt feel like anything but a wave
