I just noticed that the window for booking has increased to almost 24 hours. Is this something new? When did it start?

I noticed the extra long window the other day too...it seems to me that they don't want to offer multiple dings in a day anymore. I understand the economy is bad, but if they offered stellar flight prices they might increase the number of people flying SW.

I'm sorry b/c this is probably a stupid question but I'm really trying to figure out what the deal is with DING fares. How does it work? Do you only find out about them if you're online at the time the DING occurs? Is there any way to check them for that day, on their website, or only if you actually GET the DING?

Also - how far out to they DING? We're going end of Jan so I assume that the DINGS for then won't be till Nov or Dec?? So if you booked a ticket already and then get DING'd, does that mean you can get a credit for the difference in fare???

Any way to personalize what they send you? (IE if you're only looking for specific cities?) THANKS!!!

I think I can answer a few questions. The Ding icon will be on your desktop, so if you click on it, you can see the current Ding offer. Also you can customize the Dings that you get, for the cities that you want to leave from and arrive to. You can do all of that when you download the program.

I would like to know the answer about getting a credit from a Ding offer if you have already bought tickets. Hopefully someone else can help us out with that one.

When you download Ding it will allow you to cutomize your cities. If you already have it downloaded click on the Southwest Icon and go to "update Registration" to pick your cities to customize.

The dings are only available for a time period in the day. In order to get them in a timely fashion, right click on the icon and pick "enable audio notification" so you get the actual "DING" sound.


You will not be refunded for a ding fare. You will have to cancel your original flights and use the immediate credits you get from that to pay for your Ding fares. The money that is left over is a credit that you can use towards other flights (yours or anyone else's) within in one year of the original booking.

For our city, Baltimore, the DING fares are sometimes more than the available lowest fare and then they aren't available for the fares that don't have the cheap flights available,so Ding has essentially become useless these days (at least for BWI). So I don't worry about them much. But if you want to get Ding fares is it always advisable to book one way flights.

For instance you booked a roundtrip fare from BWI to MCO for $79 both ways with good flights. Now a Ding comes out for $49 but only on the flight down. The Return trip flights are now $109 for the same flights you are currently booked on. In order to take advantage of the $49 fare you have to cancel BOTH sides of the reservation because you booked them roundtrip. While you can rebook the flights now you will pay 49 for the trip down but have to pay 109 for the flight home. So you have lost your savings.

Does that make sense? Instead always book your flights one way so you can easily just cancel one side of the flight if a DING comes along. Of course this will only allow you to have funds for a future trip, not a refund.
