What questions should I ask? Right now I am just trying to set up appointments to have them come by the house we are buying to get estimates. I was thinking of just having the contractor do the living/dining/entry/kitchen, but now we are thinking of saving ourselves the work and have them paint the whole house.

Anyway, what are some questions I should ask when setting up appointments to get estimates and what should I ask when they come to do the estimate?

How extensive will the prep work be (power wash? sand? scrape?).

How many coats (primer + 2 coats?).

How applied (brush, spray)?

How long to complete job?

References?

Keep check on your paint colors--darker colors will cost more due to priming and extra coats. We will be having our home painted and the quote was for "neutral". We have 3 rooms out of the bunch that will be dark colors. So that ups the price.

And my favorite question: Licensed? Bonded? Insured?

who moves the furniture? and what about taping off the trim? My cousin and I were just talking about this today and she and her DH saved money when they taped everything off themselves. I personally would never pay someone to paint my house. Its something my DH and I actually do very well together. We have fun with it and its the only house project that we can do with fighting, LOL! Good luck to you!

We planned on doing it, but the whole house needs re-doing in every room. The previous owners chose nearly every paint color available and did a really bad job when they did paint. They also had kids, so every room has crayon on the walls, scuff marks, etc. I was also hoping that the trim just needed a good cleaning, but nope, most of the trim needs to be repainted as well.

The living room/dining room is a deep dark red.
The kitchen is a slamon colored BRIGHT red with a wallpaper border at the top.
The guest bath is a deep dark green. In a room without much light or a window, it's very dark.
The master bedroom and bath are baby blue. Liveable, however the walls are marked up and filthy.
The master bath is okay, a baby blue (same as master bedroom), but the ceilings are high, so it would save us having to buy a new ladder.
The guest room was left builder's white, but was turned into a canvas for a small child.
The room that will be our daughters is a different shade of baby blue, with a bad job of bedboard paneling and uneven chair rail that runs halfway up the wall. Cute idea, and I'd just paint the top, however the beadbord work looks really bad.

Anyway, most of it is just not my thing. I can live with the hallway the way it is, but everything else has just got to go.

I will be seeking two quotes....one for doing the WHOLE house and the other for dining/living/kitchen/entry. All of these rooms are big though, so as my MIl says, if I'm getting those done what'sa few other rooms...and then everything is done before we move in.

However, I may change my mind and do it all myself (ourselves). When I do, I will give everyone on the DISboards a head's up to invest in the makers of Kilz primer and Behr paint. I will get to know these makers very well come June.

Try asking them one or two questions that you already know the answer to (pretend like you're totally clueless). How they answer will tell you a lot about the people you're dealing with. If they seem like they don't know, or they tell you something incorrect or out-and-out lie to you, then you move on to the next painter on your list.

Before you commit to the whole house, contract to have them do a couple of rooms first. That way you can see what their work habits are. Can't tell you how many flaky painters I've dealt with over the years!!!! I think that paint fumes makes them crazy after awhile.
