I read on another thread about hiring a "car" instead of a taxi, and it was less expensive. Anyone have information about this? There are 9 of us, so we really do not want to do MEARS (too $$) or Lynx (we have a disabled son)

I did a price match with Murray Hill transportaton . I am having a van come pick my family up (van will fit up to 10) for $100 roundtrip from MCO to Shades of Green. We also get a grocery stop and a carseat for free with them :)

Years ago (1999) before ME, I booked a company (I think it was Tiffany's) and they picked us up at the airport and took us to our Universal hotel (BW) we also received a grocery stop. I also booked them to take us from that hotel to ASMo and then back to MCO when we were finished our vacation. We were in a towncar but they may have larger vehicles.

It's called a "car service". The difference is that a car service operates on a pre-negotiated fee for the distance; they do not use a mileage meter, so you do not risk having to pay extra for time spent sitting idle in traffic. They tend to have a varied fleet of vehicles, from regular full-size sedans up to full-size buses; you pay according to the size of vehicle you want/need.

Generally taxis are cheaper if you are travelling mid-day or later in the evening (not likely to encounter many traffic delays) and if you do not have more than 4 passengers. A car service will normally be cheaper for a large party travelling at peak times.

Depending on what day of the week you are going, driving yourself in a rented vehicle (or vehicles) could be the cheapest option, barring LYNX, of course.

Taxis may be an expensive way to solve, if you are visiting a city, you never had, for the novice driver may use the fact that you do not know the shortest route to the destination. We do not like to think about it, but it does happen. If you want a private driver service, which will cost you more often, and the number of visitors they charge so if you are traveling with family can be very expensive.
