My niece (19 months) is currently in Children's in Cinci. She was born with hip dysplagia, and treated successfully with the harness. All follow ups have been good. She was due for next f/u next week.

The past few days she had a low grade temp and diarrhea. However she is teething so no real red flags until today when she started walking on her tip toes and refusing to bear weight. Ashton called her ortho, and he said to wait, see and bring her in tomorrow or Monday. That did not sit well, so she took her in.

Right now, the x-rays are inconclusive and will be repeated in the AM, and blood cultures are pending. Hopefully it is a viral issue and not bacterial.

Please tell me everything/anything you can. I am feeling really helpless 3 states away.:guilty:

Thanks, Yes it stinks being away.

I am a nurse, but have never works peds so not really sure what to expect. I was hoping someone from here might have some experience. Not looking like anyone does.

But again, thanks:hug:

My DD was born with hip dysplasia - it was detected when she was one day old and she was put into a pavlic harness. The harness didn't do the trick so they performed surgery on her hips at 2 months. She had to wear a little body cast with her legs out to the side - it's called a spica cast. She started with the cast all the way to her ankles for the first few weeks and then cut it down to her knees so her little legs could dangle and kick. Eventually, they cut the cast in half so you could remove half to clean her up and put it back on. She finally was out of the cast at 6 months and started crawling a week later. There were two challenges to having her in the cast: she couldn't fit into a normal car seat and you had to keep the cast dry (including around the genital area). Rather than keep her in diapers, we had to line her cast with plastic wrap where there was an opening for her to go to the bathroom and we had to put her on a frame (bradford frame) over a bedpan. As for the car seat, the social worker put us in touch with a state agency that had a special car seat that was cut out to fit the cast. We were able to borrow it until she no longer needed it.

As for long term prognosis, my DD is very athletic and plays softball and volleyball with no problem. She has had no residual pain and only has two small scars on her inner thighs to show for it. I have no experience with hip sepsis. I don't know what to tell you on that.

Cincinnati Children's Hospital is the best. They have a great reputation here. So glad your SIL didn't listen to the doctor. Sometimes a mother knows best. Your niece will be in my prayers. Please keep us updated.

Poor little thing--hopefully it is bacterial so they can treat it vs viral where it just have to run it's course.
