Hi,

We were thinking of going to Hilton Head for a few days getaway. Does anyone have a recommendation for a nice hotel or inn? We were looking to stay two or three nights. I've read about a few hotels, including the Crowne Plaza, and they have mixed reviews. We just want to spend a few days at the beach and check out the area. I've never been to the East coast.

Firts off let me tell you, you will LOVE HHI. We have been going every yr since I was 6 months old and I am now 38! Our favorite hotel is the WEstin in Port Royal, but you could get a great villa for a few nights that would give you a full kitchen (save some $ on eating atleast breakfast in) and alot more room! You could check out Seapines.com, resortquest.com, or destinationvacation.com. All great, reputable companies that we have used. PM me if you have specific questions, I would love to help out!

Have you considered Disney's Hilton Head Resort (Disney Vacation Club)? Disney property (quality control) and if you are not a DVC Member you could rent the points from an existing member. There are plusses and minuses like
  • (+) not have to pay room sales tax
  • (-) don't have maid service everyday
  • (+) rooms tend to be larger and more home-like
  • (-) generally have to pay for the room upfront (details are member specific) and may have significant cancel penalties
  • (+) cost of the stay can be significantly less expensive than a 'traditional' hotel
  • (+) finding a member to rent points is generally pretty easy (okay...this is a shameless plug, but I would still recommend this path despite who you select to rent from.:rolleyes1

The DVC HHI is beautiful! Lots of fun although not directly on the beach~
We like the Westin, their ammenities are awesome, but their rooms have gotten a little worn for the price.
The other resort we love is The Marriott HHI Resort, the rooms were recently refurbed and an overall nice resort. Pools are great, right on the beach too.
Another option if you want a villa like place that we love (pricey) but beautiful, updated, wonderful ammenities is Marriott's Surfwatch.

One resort I would not recommend is the Hilton. Ick. DH stayed there for business and is not picky and even he did not care for it. Although they have a steakhouse that is very good.

We love HHI. We stay at Island Links Resort in the Port Royal Plantation or the Disney Resort.

Look at redweek.com and tug2.net for rentals and reviews.

When were you thinking of going? This month? During the summer?

We would be going in July just for a few days towards the end of the month. We looked at the Crowne Plaza and they had a firefighters discount brining the room to $127 a night, but the reviews were just ok. I'll check into the suggestions made so far, I really appreciate it!

Anywhere we shouldn't miss as visitors? Or any special icecream places the kids would really like?

ETA: Disney resort would be fun, but the days we wanted aren't available.

I haven't been to this resort in person but it looks nice online. And your rate is pretty wonderful---I don't think you'll get better than that during the month of July, which is high season for HH. CP's regular rates are about double that.

It's a little distance from the beach, so plan on a hot walk to get there.

Fun ice cream place: Marley's, at the Sea Pines Circle. They have yummy ice cream you order from an outdoor booth and in the summer there is live music at night, and a few outdoor games you can hang out and play.

Definitely rent bikes.

If going out to eat make use of the restaurants with Early Bird Specials. They can't be beat and are a great way to enjoy local places at reasonable prices and without a long wait. Pick up a restaurant guide when you arrive--has menus for most of the places on island.

This may be your first trip but I bet it won't be your last! Most people who go to HH fall in love with it for life. :cloud9:

Go to Harbour Town to see the Iconic Lighthouse. there is a Salty Dog Cafe there and during the summer Gregg Russell sings songs for kids under the tree been going since I was a kid and can't wait to take mine there...

Actually the Salty Dog is in SOuth Beach NOT harbour Town. Harbour Town has the Quarterdeck that IMO has better drinks, better music, and a better view!
