A hidden gem! Just back from a week in the low country, If you want a Disney fix without the parks, and a relaxing time this is the one. Direct flights to Atlanta and historic Savannah just an hour from the resort. Great kids activities, and good southern hospitality. Any UK other Disneyphiles visited?

Yes, we went a few years ago and although we had a tropical storm for almost all of our visit, still managed to enjoy it and will go back again, but I think only for 3 or 4 days. We liked the small town of Beaufort nearby. Also love Savannah and have been a few times but prefer to stay there for a couple of nights rather than do a side trip from HH. Same goes with Charleston.

That's good to know. :thumbsup2 We'd definitely like to try Hilton Head in the future but didn't have enough points for this year.

We're staying at AKV for 10 nights, split into 2 stays with a week up in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina(different timeshare exchange) in the middle and a night in both Savannah & Charleston on the return trip to Orlando.

Much as I love Disney, I really enjoy getting out and about to see other parts of America so I'm really looking forward to seeing that part of the country.

As an aside, if you are going to Savannah I recommend reading Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt - a great true story about evil lurking beneath the surface in the Old South and Savannah in particular. There is also a film directed by Clint Eastwood starring Kevin Spacey and John Cusack. You can do tours of locations from 'The Book' (as it is apparently known locally) and it really does bring it to life when you know a little of what has gone on there.

For Beaufort, the 1980s film 'The Bill Chill' has a cult following and was filmed there. A group of friends from the sixties meet up in the eighties; great sixties music soundtrack.

Charleston is just historic Old South beautiful, but for me is a bit far for a day trip from Hilton Head; I prefer to stay over - but people do it!

Hilton Head island is a very green (as in lots of grass and trees!) and a classy place. All the shops and restaurants have subtle exteriors so you don't see the Wal-Mart or McDonalds (not actually sure they have one of these, LOL) from half a mile away. I don't remember seeing any hoardings/billboards etc.

I can feel the urge to go back just writing this ;). So thank you for the reminder Welcome Home!, planning will begin soon :thumbsup2

Thanks for all the great info Pootle. :thumbsup2

I watched Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil about a month ago so I'm looking forward to seeing some of the sights. We've only got 24 hours in Savannah so we've got a lot to pack in. The Southern hospitality is evident as the people seem really nice from my experiences to date in booking tours etc. The owner of the trolley tour company in Savannah has even given us complimentary theatre tickets for a family show on the Sat night, very generous and completely unexpected. :)

We loved Hilton Head, quiet, relaxing and yet still Disney. The resort is beautiful and the beach house was wonderful.

We saw dolphins from the beach, can't get much better than that!

The island itself is ok. Beaufort was really pretty, we didn't manage to get down to Savannah or Charleston as DH doesn't want to spend his whole vacation driving. We did do Huntington state park where we saw a snake hunt and kill a frog, pretty cool stuff.
