Hilton Head in the off-season?

DVC-curious, here. I am looking at all the options, because I'm interested in occasionally using points for non-WDW vacations. I notice on the point charts that in the off-season, Hilton Head points are so low they are practically giving them away. Is there just nothing to do in Hilton Head in January? Too cold too swim? What can you do in the off-season?

The pictures of the resort look beautiful, but I feel like I don't know much about it. I don't really know much about Hilton Head Island itself, really. Could some HH experts give me the lowdown?

Hilton Head Island is a wonderful place year round. From March thru November it offers good weather and lots of recreational activities, dining options and shopping- something for every taste.

In Dec, Jan and Feb- the weather is more unpredictable and the ocean is certainly too cool to enjoy a swim. Golf is a major draw to the island year round and is enjoyable even in the cooler months,

Winter temps may range from the low 40's to low 70's. There is still plenty to do there as well as side trips to Savannah and Charleston.

Tommy Towery hosts a great HH web site, with lots of information about the area.

Enjoy!

HH is a nice place year round however some of the restaurants and activities close during at least some of the off season. Lets compare to other options rather than just comparing to DVC itself. During part of the off season, an II member can rent a 2 BR at a number of top Marriott's for as little as $325 per week. One could also exchange a DVC studio at HH (55 points) for many of those same units but only for the resorts on the DVC-II list. It's also too cold to swim in the ocean during a significant portion of the off season though many of the resorts have heated and/or indoor pools.

We had a great visit over Xmas and New Year this year. The main reason we went was because the points are SOOO LOW. We had a great time playing golf, horse riding , swimming in the pool/hottub, walking along the beach, dolphin cruise. 10 days just flew by. The ocean is too cold really to swim, I'm sure there are some Nordic peoples that would think it warm enough, but not me LOL.

The temps while we were there, we had 3/4 days in the low 80s , 3/4 days in the mid 70s and 2/3 days hi 60s low 70s. But 2 days after we left a lot of South Carolina had snow, so it can be very mixed.

We were there for 2 days in January. One day was coolish, the other warmish.
We loved bikeriding on the beach with the fog rolling in. It was surreal. The pool was chilly, but tolerable after being in the hot tub. We could have had the pool house to ourselves, but we weren't dressed for swimming.
There were campfires both nights with story telling and several planned activites during the day.
It was a relaxing time. Plus, if your are interested in shoping, there is tons on the way to the resort.

My family spent the week leading up to Xmas at Hilton Head (fell in love with the resort and purchased DVC). We had a great time. There were so many activities we did not get to do half of what we thought we would do. When DH and I are empty nesters in a few years, we plan on maximizing our points and staying in a one bedroom villa for a week each year in early December (104 points) and still have more than enough for a studio for five days in May so we are really happy with the off season point schedule at HH.

We could tell in December it was off season. The island and the resort seemed really quiet but we loved it that way. Things we did: played pool in the den, ate at several great restaurants, did some sightseeing, played checkers, sat in front of the fireplace in the den, spent some time at the beach house and shopped at the outlet malls. Things we look forward to doing our next trip: swimming, biking, campfire, dolphin cruise, cooking classes, Private Affair with Chef Gordon, fishing, mini golfing and trying some of the other restaurants recommended on this board. We will do all these things in the off season. I think you will have a wonderful time at Hilton Head no matter which season you choose to vacation!

Lisa
