Hi: Can someone who has been to wdw hilton head are there alot of biting bugs there, or can you stroll around and not get bit during the day.

Thanks,

Deb.

When you get into South Carolina, you cross the International Mosquito Line. They are really bad right now, because we have had a lot of rain. If we go outside at all during the day, we put on mosquito repellant. Plus, there is the threat of West Nile Virus. Never hurts to be safe!!!

Hi

Thanks, for the info about the mosquito I read about some sort of bug in south carolina called either a brown flea or a noseeum, do you know if they are also out.

Deb.

We were there in early September on our trip and the noseeums weren't too bad on the beach, but the mosquito attacks were terrible. You'll definitely need industrial strength bug repellent, especially if you go to the bonfire in the evening. I was using some organic stuff since DD was only 6 months old and they ate me alive, although she didn't get a single bite. Next time I'll take something with DEET.

This is a really great resort. It's incredibly laid-back and relaxing. Hope you have a terrific time. :sunny:

A LOT is two words.

Jus kiddin'. With the wind there are very few bugs at HH Island (flying bugs anyways). In the summer and fall it IS bad though.

We just returned from HH on Fri 6/10.
I didn't need to use bug spray when I walked the resort.
I did notice there were more bugs out at the pool at night.

I think I had one bug bite over the entire 8 day trip.

I would think you would want bug spray if you go to the barbeque or campfire.

Have fun.

As we live in South Carolina I can attest that there are fewer mosquitoes here than in New York, where we previously lived for 20 years. As it happens we just returned from Hilton Head and there were NO bugs and we spent all of our time outdoors. :sunny:

When we go, my son and I hardly get bitten at all; my husband and daughter get attacked by mosquitos and noseeums. For some reason, they seem to be attracted to certain people, but not to others. I'd bring the spray, "just in case"...

I would bring the spray, just in case. We were in HH last August and did not find the bugs bad at all.

We are at HHI right now, and I would say the bugs are biting, day and night. I have several bites on my legs, and a couple on my arms. The same goes for everyone but the BOY... no bites on him, but the rest of us have 4 or 5.... Dusk is the worst time....

I remember reading a post about bringing a folding screen for the door - what is it called and where do you purchase? I saw one in a mailorder catalog, but I don't know what size is needed...

Laurabearz, we seem to be in the minority by reporting that we were eaten up by the bugs. Perhaps we are just sweeter than the rest? :scratchin It does make one think...

Seriously though, it porbably is true that if you have problems with mosquitos at home, they'll probably like the way you taste at HH too.

One more vote for the no bugs team. We were there the first week of June in plenty of heat and with plenty of moisture and didn't have a bite among the three of us (DW, DD4, and moi). I rarely get bitten, anyway, while DW seems to have a sign saying "MOSQUITOES: BITE ME!" Even she was unaffected as it turns out. That being said, it's never a bad idea to take bug spray with you anyplace where there may be the potential for biting insects of any kind. :earsboy:

The center for disease control approved a new bug repellant this april:
http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/RepellentUpdates.htm

Check out:

and I found the following in Lowes:

Deet has some risk to it, and smells pretty strong. We were going to give this new repellent a try.

We've used Avon in the past with success, but it's not CDC approved....

We just got back from HHI and we have to agree with Laura on this one. We were biten quite a few times while we were out in the evening.
