High Schoolers & major extra-cirricular trips

DS is doing odd jobs now to pay for a New york trip this summer. It will cost $1600 plus spending money. I think we will send him an extra $400 for that as I am sure eating in NY will be expensive and the provided meals won't be enough. I am excited and nervous about sending him. High school sure has a lot more opportunity than when I was that age!

OP - Good luck to your family finding the money for the boys to go on both trips.

New York sounds great! What sort of odd jobs has your son been able to do?

DS high school marching band trip is to WDW in April and then again in April 2011(his senior year) total cost is $1070 . . .which is pretty high for one person, I thought . . .but anyways, he has participated in every fundraiser since the start of school until now. He's only earned about $200 towards it, the rest we are paying for. They gave us coupon booklets and we have made payments since June 08 . . .our last payment is in February (thank god) nothing like have another payment to make every month . . .it was almost like having a 4th car. I think for the 2011 trip I'm going to start to put money aside now, since it'll probably be another $300 or more than it is for this year's trip.

I found with the fundraising that people are not as generous as in previous years because of the economy . . .not too many people are willing to buy pies or go to a car wash or buy pizza cards . . .the best fundraiser he did was work at the Corn Maze during the fall. They paid him minimum wage and put it directly into his account for band.

He has done the usual stuff. Babysitting, lawn work. He would like to get a job but I don't see anyway he can do the homework be in the shows and have a job. Both grandparents were generous at birthday and Christmas with money to help. We are lucky to be able to swing it without him working.

Those sound like great trips. Honestly I would not be looking to my 13 or 15 year old child to contribute anything towards it though, other than maybe saving their allowance towards spending money.
Our high school band goes to Disney every year on a trip so I am already braced knowing that once she gets in high school that is coming and I already started a big water bottle of change that I keep adding to and since she is only in 4th grade it will be pretty full by high school band trip time! They also go on antoher smaller trip like Hershey Park every year in band. I know the language class kids also get offered a trip- the French class goes to France, the spanish class goes to spain etc so that is happening in high school to but they only offer it to the 11th and 12th graders so we have time with that one! We will just be skipping family vacation for those years and opting for her going on the school trips instead LOL.
