High school gun scare today

My daughter's high school had a gun scare today, they were in lock down for 4 hours! She said the police were all over the place, they all had to open and dump their purses and backpacks. Lockers were opened and searched. No guns were found thankfully. She thought the school should have dismissed them but I say they did the right thing. What if the person WANTED the school dismissed and was waiting outside to ambush? A school shooting is my worst fear. When they were younger I told them to always know what little cubicle or closet they could get in to so they could hide. Now in highschool and middle school there really aren't any cubicles or closets in the classrooms.

The highschool is really up on this (so is the middle school) they have drills once in a while. Doors get locked to the classrooms, lights go off and big sheets of paper go over the windows so no one can see inside.

Wow, that is scary. A high school up in Bailey, CO actually did have a gunman in the school today with hostages.

wow thats super scary .. that could have turned into a re incadent of columbine shooting in 1999.. worst shooting ever..moms watch ur kids cafully give them attention. tust me sometime i want to shot my mom.. dont we all sometimes.. lol moniter if u have to :surfweb: lol jk

Yep, it is a huge fear of mine. We have never had an incident in this area. There was one that involved a parent shooting his ex (I believe) in the city, but our suburbs have been pretty tame. We have had bomb threats where they evactuated the school, but this is the first time they have been through the lock down for real with police and everything. Makes this usually laid back , worry free Mom very nervous!

The hostage in the Bailey shooting has died. It's just heartbreaking.

That is horrible. It makes me sick to think that people actually do horrible things like this :sad2:

I work with several people who have kids who go to school in Bailey. They all bailed around noon but they closed the highway so nobody was getting in or out. Lots of terrified parents. Unfortunately an innocent girl was killed.

I wonder what the political fallout from this will be. Less than 35 miles from Columbine HS and it's the same county. Now they sherriff's department goes to the other end of the spectrum. Im sure there will be an outcry that they were aggressive, but if you lived here you'd understand that if it does turn out that the girl was inadvertantly killed by a SWAT person or the like, it's tragic but I think they acted correctly. I'm not saying it's what should have happened (if it did) but the police and the government had no choice but to act or be labeled as cowards and ineffective by the community in which we live.

Just remember that these cops were out there putting their lives on the line everyday and nobody should envy their job. I support their actions, at least what I have found has happened to this point.

I hadn't heard that, that is so sad. I wish that the kids could grow up the way I did. My biggest worry was what to eat for lunch everyday.

Actually, Platte Canyon highschool is in Park County. Columbine is in Jefferson. But the counties are next to each other. Jeffco officers did assist today.

Just finished watching the local live press conference. They are not releasing much info yet, but it is confirmed that the gunman is the one who shot the 16 year old hostage, not the swat team. He then turned the gun on himself and committed suicide. This happened when the SWAT team entered.

The Park County Sheriff said that he could not release info until the CBI reviews, but something happened after the 4pm deadline that made the SWAT teams think they had to move immediately.

We should know more as it unfolds.

The shooter's body is still in the highschool and everything has been shutdown as a crime scene.

OP - thank goodness your situation turns out ok. It is so scary when this stuff happens!

:grouphug: to both communities that are regrouping tonight

Wow that is super scary. I will be praying forr you all tonight. I was scared that it was going to happen today at schools. Today being National See You At the Pole...

What is National See You At The Pole? I have never heard of this?

My daughter is ok with all of this, I'm probably more upsethe was mad cause they were stuck in a room all day and missed classes and lunch! Kids, thank god they are more resilient than their Moms and Dads.

National See You At The Pole is a Religious affair that goes on all across the country each year. It is a time to pray for your school, classmates, family, friends, teachers, country ....and so on.. There is a big turn out at most schools each year.

I'm not sure there was a right or wrong way to handle the Bailey situation. The SWAT team entered and the child was shot, but perhaps these actions may have spared the other child her life? It's just a sad, sad, situation.

I'm so glad to hear that everything worked out your way, Nancy. I just wish both stories had similar outcomes. :sad1:

That's scary Nancy. Must be in the air - last week, DD's high school had two evacuations for bomb threats.

What is wrong with society that this stuff keeps happening? :confused3

My son's high school had a gun incident on Monday, but I didn't even know about it until yesterday when I got a recorded call from the school and my son didn't know about it until I told him! A student overheard another student saying that they had a gun and they told school authorities. The student was taken into police custody without incident. The recording didn't say that there wasn't a gun, so I assume that there was a gun. It also didn't say that it was after school hours (that I heard), but I'm wondering if it was or it seems that they would have been in lockdown. Could be that it happened so quick that it would have taken more time to go into lock-down than to take the kid into custody. Scary to think about, though!
