I am watching Oprah - the story of a woman who would binge eat and purge 2-3 times per day. She was afraid to purge in the toilet for fear her husband would find out, so she purged in a plastic bag then hid them in the back of her closet. She kept the bags there for a week then drove them away from home to a dumpster somewhere. Thank goodness her family intervened and got her the help she needed. She hasn't binged or purged in seven months!

Ok, this is officially the grossest thing that I have ever read on the dis. :crazy2:

Thank goodness I am not at home.....the thought of that make my stomach turn.. I am glad that she has gotten help....that can be a very tough thing to overcome. But putting it in the closet :faint: :scared:

No offence, but didn't anyone notice a bad smell eminating from the closet earlier than a week? :crazy2:

Okay, that is really really gross. Is this on todays Oprah? Because if it is I will delete it from my DVR without even seeing what is on.

I know it's gross, but it's so unbelievable I had to share! You think reading about it is bad, they showed everything on t.v. ... including all the bags she saved up that week.

I haven't seen the Oprah episode yet (I'm on the west coast), but is this the same girl that was on the show Intervention? I can't recall her name right now, but it sounds just like it. She would eat and eat all day and then throw up in ziplock bags and hide them in the closet then once a week she would pack them all up in a box and drive to a dumpster somewhere to throw them all away. I believe she also used a toothbrush to purge herself so that the smell of vomit wouldn't be on her fingers..something like that. It was really sad, but if it is the same person, I'm glad to hear that the intervention worked!

Yes..it's the same girl. I haven't watched today's Oprah yet (Tivo is a beautiful thing) but I did see the commercial for it. It's the same girl from Intervention. Her story was one that really stuck with me, so I knew that this Oprah would be a must see for me!

Yes it was. She seems to be doing much better now. As gross as it was to watch I definately learned something. I had no idea bullemia could become so extreme.

Yes, but only for the first 10-15 minutes.

Ugh that makes me so sick thinking about it. I usually watch Oprah at 7pm since I'm at work during the first airing. My sister told me that people with bulemia typically vomit into the rubbermaid containers because once you put the lid on, you can't smell it because it seals in.

When I was looking at the thread listing, this one was right above the "what's for dinner" thread! :rotfl:

That's very sad, I'm glad she's getting help.

Even though it's a very "gross" subject, I think her story is very informative for adults and teens who may be struggling with bulemia. I've never had an eating disorder, so I was incredibly misinformed about how severe it can be and this woman's story really opened my eyes to the disease. It was amazing to see what lengths she went to in order to hide it from her family and even though they had a clue that she was having issues, they had no idea it was as bad as it really was. I think the most incredible thing was the amount of bags she would be throwing out at the end of the week, there were literally a dozen or more ziplock bags and they were the gallon size!

I'm really happy to hear that she has gotten help and is staying strong through her recovery.

I agree.

I actually have suffered from both bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa, although most people who even know that I have an eating disorder at all only know about the anorexia. (Amazing, the sense of security I have about so casually posting this information here--wild horses couldn't drag it out of me if I was talking to you all face to face!!)

This is because while people will usually offer some kind of support or sympathy to an anoretic, a bulimic is just "gross". and believe me, bulimics know exactly how "gross" they're being...that knowledge just perpetuates the self-loathing even more. I can't even describe the intense shame of the disease...I think this woman is so, so brave.

I hope the help she gets is quality...when I was first being treated, very little effort or money was being set aside for eating disorder treatment..and I think the idea that these conditions are less serious than "real" disorders is still prevalent...I'm quite sure that I began to develop bulimia due to the sub-par care I got as an anoretic...

I know someone that did this. Her family knew she had an eating disorder but thought she had it under control. Her husband kept noticing a bad smell in they're basement and went looking for the culprit and found bags of vomit.

I don't understand why they just don't flush it, that seems alot easier to hide and a little more sanitary.

I haven't watched the episode yet, it's on the DVR upstairs, but yeah, it's amazing what lengths people suffering from bulemia go to.

In college I had a small studio apartment in an old house, 4 of us shared 1 common bathroom. One of the studios was rented by a woman who didn't live there full time. She was bulemic and used it as a binge/purge place. she lived with her boyfriend but kept this place to hide her secret. So sad.

My daughter, who is 25 now and lives in a studio apartment outside of our house (she is bi-polar) does this. It is the most gross thing anyone can come accross. As dad, I have on many occasions (when she was gone) cleaned her apartment and found throw-up in many containers. We have tried to talk to our daughter and understand what is going on. I mean if you are going to throw-up why not just do it in the toilet? For now we just have to inspect her apartment everyday. So far she hasn't done this for a few months. I have searched high and wide to find some info on this, but there really isn't anything helpful. I think this has something to do with the condition of HOARDING! Doesn't sound right, but Oprah did a show on this too and I think this is the root of the problem. I hope everyone will continue to understand that this is a serious problem and not a joke.

Thanks, Rob

I think the thing with bulemia is that if someone notices you going to use the restroom everytime you eat, they might catch on.
