For New Year's, my wife Jen was inspired by the Nova Marathon Challenge and Dis Unplugged discussions of the Disney marathons to declare: "By January 2009, I'd like to do the Mickey half marathon."
Since our main exercise at the time was Dance Dance Revolution, my internal reaction was "Um, there's a reason why if something is very long they call it a marathon -- marathons are freaking long!" But, after watching the Nova special and realizing that it's easier to stick to a training program in pairs, I agreed to join her in her ambitious goal.
After 4 months of training, we had the opportunity to do the Minnie 15K, suddenly we encountered lots of really nice people in bright yellow W.I.S.H. shirts, who emanated a sincere aura of camaraderie and shared an unbridled enthusiasm for Disney. It was simply inspiring.
Other than being given an XL woman's shirt (I was one of only 200 men in the 3000 person run), it was a great experience. So good, in fact, that while the January half marathon is closed, Jen and I have signed up for the full (fingers crossed).
So, I wanted to take this opportunity to say: Hi and thanks for doing what you're doing!
