Folks,

We are planning to go to HHI next year. A few questions I hope someone can answer for me...

1. Do you HAVE to take the shuttle to the beach or can you walk there?

2. If you can walk to the beach, how long is the walk?

3. Are there sidewalks?

We've never been to HHI, so we really don't have a clue what to expect.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Yes, you can walk, bike or drive too. There is a pathway. It is a bit over a mile to the beach from the resort. The have a path under the highway so you don't have to cross the busy road.

Yes, you can easily walk to the Beach House from the resort. Someone recently posted that they measured and it was almost exactly one mile. The walkway under the highway prevents you from having to venture out into busy traffic, and once you are on the other side you have a nice shady area, with trees covered in Spanish moss all the way there. HH is a great vacation - thoroughly relaxing and fun!!!

1. As others have mentioned, you can shuttle, walk, run, or bike to the beach from the resort. You can even drive your own car if you want which is what we did.
2. I ran the distance several times last summer, and it's definitely over a mile using the sidewalks as they don't exactly parallel the streets. In fact, I'd say it's closer to 1.5 miles than 1 mile. That being said, it's shaded most of the way; the paths/sidewalks are wide and well-maintained; and you go through housing/condo areas where there is a lot of foot/bike traffic along the way so it's not as if you're going it alone. Now, unless you enjoy walking long distances on your way to the beach (would you be carrying extra gear like books, games, lotions? will you be in sandals? do you have small kids?), I'd suggest either driving or biking. Bike rentals are available in numerous places, including along the way to the beach.
3) Obviously, yes. ;) The sidewalks/paths are all paved and often have painted lines to help guide you.

In case you didn't know, Disney has its own beach house in addition to the resort. The beach house has a grill (burgers, dogs, sandwiches, fries, etc.), another pool (no slide), a game room, an activities room, a bar, and bath facilities to include showers. They also provide you towels. You can rent an umbrella or beach chairs from the lifeguards at the beach, but they aren't regulated or owned by Disney. We enjoyed HHI since it is more laid back, less hectic than a trip to WDW.
