In general , charleston looks our best option to fly in.

Staying 4 or 5 nights. Do most people rent a car or do you out find you don't really need one while non property?

I did snag a 1 bedroom but don't plan on any major cooking. It's just myself and hubby.

Excited to try a new Disney resort and just wondering what others generally do. Thanks in advance. !

What we do is RELAX. It's awesome! We like to sit on our balcony and just chill. I enjoy reading in the many hammocks around the resort. It's also fun to rent bikes and explore the island. There are bike trails to make it easier. With that said, you can get to several restaurants using bikes or walking, but we have found that we like having a car to get to some of our favorites or to visit some of the nature areas, like Pinckney Island and Sea Pines Forest Preserve. Outside Hilton Head has a booth across the Shelter Cove Marina where you can rent kayaks and paddle boards and book dolphin cruises, etc. There are lots of things to do on HHI without feeling like you have to rush, rush, rush.

Did you look into flying into Savannah? Our son used that airport last year when he met us for Thanksgiving and it only took us a little over an hour to get there from the resort. Of course his already late night flight was delayed by several hours so it was around 1 AM :crazy2: . But having zero traffic was awesome! It probably would take a bit longer other times of the day, but it's certainly closer than Charleston. Of course depending on where you are flying from Charleston might offer a better flight options. Just thought I'd mention Savannah though.

As for what to do, we always drive down so we have our car. I guess it's possible to get by without one, but I really wouldn't want to. Just like the previous poster, we go to HHI to relax. We love to walk on the beach, sit overlooking the marsh with a good book, enjoy the amazing low country cuisine and just recharge. My husband and son have done some charter fishing before which they really enjoyed and it's a short walk to Shelter Cove to catch the boat. Last Jan my husband and I drove to Savannah and booked a food tour which was fantastic. I'd like to try one of the dolphin tours someday, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

We used to sometimes fly in to Charleston if the price was good. However, they messed up the rental car location a few years ago, and now you walk forever to get the car. As others mentioned, Savannah is closer and so much easier. Another option is Jacksonville, but it's been over 10 years since we flew in there, so I hesitate to recommend it. A lot of things may have changed. And yes, you really do need a rental car at the resort. I also think you made an excellent choice to get a one-bedroom for you and your spouse.

HHI has an airport and there are a few flights in and out - I know pre-Covid Delta had one. But Savannah is the closest "big" airport - although Charleston may be a better direct flight airport.

Yes, you need a car. There is almost NOTHING on site, even the beach house would be a long walk (Disney does run a shuttle), and you'll want a car for going to dinner - especially if you aren't cooking. The only restaurant at the resort is a fast food counter - and the restaurants right off the resort are limited (and they've likely turned over since Covid, but only the Sociable Bakery is one I'd recommend). Disney's resort is also located on a strange part of the island - there are some shops and restaurants and a marina there - but the "busy and popular" parts of the island are transportation distance.

We did the Taste Tour and Pub Crawl and really enjoyed it. I also just notice they have a a haunted pub crawl tour. We did one of those in Charleston a few years ago with a different company and it was an absolute blast.
