HHI for New Year's... questions for HHI experts

First time to HHI, and I'm sure that this won't be a typical HHI trip, since were going over New Year's.

I'm wondering what there is to do during the month of January:
-Is everything pretty much shut down for the winter?
-How about the Disney dolphin cruises and kayaking? How does one get info on this?
-Just what kind of weather can we expect?
-Am I crazy to even think that we might be able to use the pools?
-How about day trips to Savannah and Charleston (or other places)?
-Recommend retaurants?
-Recommended HHI websites?

I appreciate any info of any kind. Thanks in advance!

We, too, will be there for New Year's after doing Xmas at WDW. I have asked some of the same questions (we have been there in July and in April, but not in the winter time). My understanding is that the island is fairly quiet, but far from deserted or lonely at that time of year. Though not all things are open, my understanding is that most restaurants, etc. stay open year round. I would highly recommend a side trip to Savannah. We have done that twice and had a great time. It is a beautiful city, lots of history, and there are a number of good places to eat. We have eaten at The Lady and Sons twice, but there are many, many other great places to eat there.

It is my understanding that the dolphin cruises do run year round, but the dolphins are not as easy to find at that time of year from what I recall being told.

We have spent NYE at HHI 4 times(3 were for 4 nights total including NYE;once just for NYE after returning from OKW). Twice, the weather was warm high 60's and ds swam in the heated pool(not the adults), once it was in the 40's with gloves and hats on the beach! It is really variable. We found the shops and restaurants were open the week of xmas-NYE and many told us they close right after this in Jan for their vacations. We really love it that week. Did alot of resort activities and day trips to Beaufort and Savannah along with pinckney island tour, outlet shopping, movies, relaxation! We are doing xmas at OKW this year...we are heading to HHI 8/12 for some hot summer activities...
