We have booked HH for our family and the inlaws for June 5-10 and will need to fly. I read where HH is accessible from Savannah & Charleston.

Looking for travel experiences at these respective airports as well as any TRANSFER information you might have.

Is it really all that necessary to rent a vehicle for our stay at HH?

HH has a small commuter-type airport. I think there are minimal connecting flights to/from HH.

IMO, personal transportation is needed to fully enjoy the area. The resort does provide transportation to the Beach House between 10:00am and 4:00pm, but otherwise you'd need to walk or bike the just-over-a-mile distance.

Getting around the resort is easy on foot and there are several restaurants/shops within 300 yards of the resort itself. However, all other areas would require transportation for shopping, dining, golf, tennis and sightseeing to enjoy the area.

There are taxi cabs available if guests will not have a car.

Enjoy!

We fly from the West Coast and so far the flights into Savannah or Charleston are usually around $450 or more. We purchase 3 tickets and $450 per ticket is too much for me.

In July we flew into Atlanta for $278 and in 2 months we fly into Raleigh, NC for $267.50, as you can see the tickets are half of what flying into Savannah would be.

Definately rent a car! There are too many things to look at on the island without a car you would be stuck at the resort. Fun but the island is very nice to tour. Lots of restaurants, golfing, shopping, etc.

A lot of people wouldn't want to drive 5 hours after flying all day. We just make it an extra day trip. Fly and get an inexpensive hotel, then drive the next day all rested and ready for VACATION!:teeth:

I'd agree with Doc that you really need your own car ( or rental) to enjoy HH to the best. I've flown into Charlotte and it's a decent ( about 3 hours I think) drive. I've returned a car to Savannah which is a much closer airport and it's also a much smaller/quieter airport but I believe it's a little more expensive (usually) to fly there. I believe the only scheduled flights into HH itself are from Charlotte on USAirways.

IMO you need a car

at HH. We flew into Savannah and it was only about a 50 minute ride to HH.

Tks all for your insightful replies. We will definitely arrange for transportation to make the most of our 1st trip to HH!!

We just used USAirways to fly from PHL to HH. We needed to change planes in Charlotte. We left at 7:30 and were at HH airport by 11:30. We have also flown into Savannah and the ride is about 50 minutes and easy. I would definitely rent a car. There are restaurants that you can walk to at Shalter Cove,, but there are others that you might want to drive to.
Happy Planning!

Can't remember why we did this but we flew to Jacksonville Fl I think because we got a much better rate. I don't remember the drive being that bad. Maybe 3 hours. I agree that you need to have a car in Hilton Head. Anyway, check rates to Jacksonville too. It was a surprise to us but turned out to be a much cheaper option but this was several years ago.

We flew into Savannah in May, 2002 and loved the airport. As you can tell from the other posts..... yes, you will need to rent a car.

We're from the NYC area and we stayed at HH over the Thanksgiving Holiday. We researched airfares greatly as we have three airports to choose from (JFK, LGA & ISP (regional). We found in all cases that jacksonville (JAX) was cheaper to fly into and drive the 2.5 - 3 hr trip to HH than fly into any other airport including Atlanta and Charleston.

Also since you will need to rent a car to get around on HH, we found that rental car prices are considerbly less than the other locations by about half.

We had used a Disney Club discount (not available anymore) but I do believe DVC (MS) offers discounts using Alamo for rental cars in Florida.

You'll also notice that there are usually more flight selections into JAX than the other airports.

Just a note. We flew USAir and when checking we did find that flights that had stops through Atlanta and then to JAX were still cheaper going onto JAX than just taking the same flight to Atlanta.

Atlanta is also 3-4 hrs in driving time. JAX is almost a direct drive up RT- I95 with speed limits posted up to 65mph.

Hope this helps.

We have used Savanah regional airport also and it is very nice and has good services and rental car facilities at the airport if you decide to fly into there.

Be advised that if you are using Expedia for your flight pricing that USAIR isn't allowing them to sell tickets until further notice. They are in a disagreement over some added chargers being added to flight costs by expedia on USAir flts only thus making their costs more money. Use Orbitz or another service to check your flt pricing.

Good Luck and shop wisely.

KennyK, next time, will you come here and drive me to/from HH? I would love to be able to make it in 3-4 hours!!

I think you'll need to allow a little more time than that to drive from Atlanta. We're in the NW suburbs of Atlanta (Marietta) and with ideal conditions, we can do the drive in about 5 hours. From the airport, you can cut off a little of that, but probably no more than about 30 minutes.

You also have to account for the fact that driving conditions in Atlanta are RARELY ideal. ;)

Whatever your choice, the flight/drive will be worth it!

Disneyaholic,

Well, I guess you're right as I haven't driven that route in along time, and you know how old age takes its toll on your memory, Well, I mean my memory, cause your not old.

Anyway, thanks for the correction. Which now gives a more realistic time frame from two locations. JAX & Atlanta.

Anybody out there drive from Charleston.

We'll be arriving at HH on June 20. We found that flying into Jacksonville from California gave us the best rates. Approximatley $290.00 round trip.

Just be aware that almost ALL of Georgia I-95 is under construction. Posted limit is 60MPH although I've found 80 works fine if there is no actual construction going on. Expect at least a 2 hr drive just from Jax to Sav and then the 40-60min on to HH. If the fare is close, come on in to Sav. There are also several companies that run between Sav airport and HH. Lowcountry Limo is the first one that comes to mind. It isn't an actual limo that picks you up, thats just their name. Mostly they have those short busses I think that look like tour busses.
