running down the busy road

Was taking the kids to school this morning and sure enough that WAS our dog :(

I pulled a Uturn and up the gravel part of the road and opened the door and in she jumped.

omgosh I was so scared! She was fine thankfully. I think it must have been the roof guy that was here yesterday that left the gate opened. ( we dont use that gate much at all and it was closed yesterday morning) I should have gone to check it but I got caught up in all the packing and stuff going on here.

Crap. I feel terrible!

What if she had gotten hit? Its a pretty busy road and it was morning and... :(

I just want to cry.

She's only gotten out a couple of times before and since then we've been so diligent about checking the gate if someone has used it.

Thank goodness for quick thinking!!! Poor dog was probably as terrified as you were.

I am so sorry.. I know how scary that is.

Dh and I went to dinner one night with the inlaws. On the way home driving through our neighborhood this big yellow dog was running right down the middle of the street right at our car. DH had to slam on brakes to keep from hitting him. Then all of a sudden I realized it was OUR big yellow lab. I popped open the back of the SUV and he climbed right inside. Somehow the 3 labs jumped on the gate of their kennel and broke the latch. They all got out, and we spent a good 1.5 hours rounding them back up.

awww...so glad it turned out fine! It's just a reminder to double check gates and doors. Good karma was with you!!

Wow! So glad your daughter noticed the poor dog!

What a scary situation. Sure glad it all turned out well. Lucky for the dog and all of you. :thumbsup2

thanks guys. :)

The last time this happened it was us who left the gate opened and she got out. Thankfully a nice polieman was on his way home and found her a block away she brought him right to the door. He was wonderful!
Since then I have always checked the gate though. I keep telling the kids to check the gate when she goes out if there is any chance someone has been through it ( the latch is up really high so my younger kids cant get to it and no one can get it from the oustide unless they have freakishly long arms) :(

I just forgot this time.

She never goes far thankfully, and it isnt like she stays outside. She is totally and indoor dog ( which is fun with an 80 pound golden retreiver) but she only goes outside to play with the kids or go potty.

Thankfully we will be moving to a new house soon where she will have a much bigger yard and a dog house and a dog run. And we wont be anywhere near a busy road. Hopefully she wont be so prone to travel.

I can't imagine the feeling you had when you realized it was your dog! Glad to know you got her back alright....
We have our dog in a gated yard and we put padlocks(that aren't locked-look like it but they are not) on all of the gates. That way no one can easily open the gate and when they see the padlocks they realize "hey maybe I shouldn't be using the gate!"

I know you didn't mean this to be funny but I'm laughing!! I can just picture driving down the road and the kids saying "mommy that looks like our dog". I'm very happy that her little adventure ended up with you getting her into the car, unhurt.

That would be very scary. You are sooo lucky that you found your dog before anything happened. I can only imagine how you felt. I am so glad that she is safe and everything is ok.
