Heroscape game

My oldest told me he wants a heroscape game for Christmas. I had NO idea what it was until now.

So, what do I get to start with? Is the basic game enough to keep him busy for a while?

The basic game is plenty to learn how to play and get the hang of it. Once you know what you're doing, the expansion packs start to look really appealing. If you can have a dragon on your team...then you'll win...or a team of flying valkyries....you get the point.

But yes, for now go with the basic game and then add things later. (that's how we did it anyhow)

Yes, unfortunately we have added A LOT of stuff. They even sell bridges and trees which are useful to hide behind. It's a fun game. My kids got out of it for a while, but are back to playing it again.

Like others said, the basic set is plenty to begin with and he can use his allowance for other bits and pieces or you can get them as rewards for him. One other thing to keep in mind is that long ago there was a simplistic, fantasy based miniatures game called "Crossbows & Catapults". It was eventually discontinued and hard to find. Recently it was released again and called Battleground, with three expansions (not needed but nice to have), and has been again discontinued. My six year old LOVES this game because of the 'working' weapons and keeps it more action based, although still with rules for turns. If he has a remote interest in something like this at all, I would recommend getting it sooner rather than later as it may not be around for long.
