Herniated disc and surgery

 I am wondering if anyone has my same problem or one close to it. My body has been doing strange things for the last few months like; tingling in arms & legs, numbness, on two occasions not able to pick up arm or leg, pain, knees and elbows shaking and other things. I have had 3 MRI's to see if I might have MS, lupus, sclerederma. What they have found is two slipped discs. The first one is a "regular slipped disc" that is not causing any problems but the other is a pain. Apparently it is herniated and has moved to where is it causing the spinal cord to be "deformed" as the radiologist report stated. The neurologist stated that she doesn't usually see them this bad and the only way to fix it would be surgery. No chiropracter or other treatment. She said she doesn't usually recommend surgery because she is not that found of surgery but I should have had this done "yesterday". I go to the neurosurgeon tomorrow and I am a bit nervous. I was expecting her to give me another diagnoses not realizing that surgery would even be an option.:worried:
My problem is this---people want me to go to a chiropracter which I have done in the past. But now that it is moving my spinal cord I am a little nervous about someone touching it. Others want me to get some kind of injections in the spine. It would actually be in the neck as it is C5-C6 area. I just want to wait to see what the doctor says tomorrow. I am so nervous but I though maybe someone here has been through this and might have some opinions.
Thank you for listening and helping!:listen:

OMG! :( I thought I would check the DIS to see if anyone else has a similar situation as me and I found your thread. My issues are further down my spine . . . L-3 to S-1. I am sending you a pm. Please let me know what the doctor says. Annmarie

When you say "people" do you mean friends and family? I would not seek chiropractic treatment if there is there is any kind of nerve compression going on in the cervical spine area. I would go straight to a neurosurgeon.

I am an ICU nurse who injured by a patient, and I have been off work with a lumbar back injury for 13 months now. I do not have a herniated disc though. I have 2 annular tears. I went through 3 MRI's, several different injections and I am still fighting this thing. I have been going to a chiropractor as well as a pain management doctor and orthopedist. 3 weeks ago, I had ablations of 4 nerve branches by the pain doctor. He told me not to go to the chiropractor for manipulation after my procedure, because it can cause increased swelling and aggrevation of the tissues. He also said that it isn't always necessary to be manipulated back into place because it can cause more harm than good. The deformity I had in my back is less now, because my muscles had been spasming so badly that it kept pulling the SI joint out of alignment, and shortening my left leg. It was like I had a bare foot of one side, and a high heeled shoe on the other side. Anyway, by killing those nerves, my muscle spasms have been much less. I have been thinking all day today that I want to go see my chiropractor tomarrow because I think that ultrasound may feel good, but I am nervous because if I am a little out, I don't want her to adjust it.

If you want to see your chiropractor for an opinion, I would take your films, reports, and discuss it with him or her before any treatment. You can also get a second opinion from the neurosurgeon about that very issue.

Good Luck

Actually I went to the neurosurgeon a week ago. There is nerve compression so he said NO ONE TOUCHES THAT NECK LIKE THAT!!!!

I will have surgery on June 30th. I am kinda nervous for surgery but I am anxious to start feeling better. My dh said when I am sleeping at night and move he can hear me say "ouch, ouch, ouch" in my sleep.

I should tell you that on the way to the neurologist office to get the results of all my tests I went over every scene, in my head , the different things the doctor would tell me like "you have MS, you have parkinsons...." I never one time thought of the word surgery. I was so shocked. I have had Csections, gall bladder surgery, and bunion surgery but to me this is a little more concerning.

Like I said though I am looking forward to getting better. I have 5 grandkids and three more on the way. I have a lot of grandkids to hold, hug and kiss on. LOL

I will be praying for you and am sending you pixie dust.

Got home yesterday and am on a lot of meds. Just wanted to send a quick note and let you know it went well. I'll post more about it when I am feeeling better. Annmarie

I am glad you are home! Rest and take it easy. Than fill me in on all the details so I know a little of what to expect. Thanks!

Sent you a pm with more information but wanted to send best wishes and pixie dust to you. I hope the next week goes by as fast for you as the three month wait I had. It seemed like the date would never arrive but now the surgery is over with and I am back home recouperating. Annmarie

Thank you for the pm and the pixie dust. I didn't realize you had to wait three months. I thought waiting three weeks was bad, I was fortunate the first two weeks went reasonably fast so I really want this next week to go fast. I am not thrilled with surgery but I want it over. You know what I mean. I do have a few things to do around my house. I tend to move slower these days so it takes me awhile. I am nuts. I want everything organized and cleaned before hand because dh is so busy without having to help me too. I go this morning for the pre surgery tests.
WHat kind of you work do you do? Do you work outside the home? I run a babysitting service so I will be taking a few weeks off. How about you?
thanks again

Hope your pre-op went well and you are now counting down single days for your surgery. I fully understand what you mean about not wanting surgery and I am sure that no one really ever does but if it can help with your pain and your health issues it is the best thing for you. I waited a long time after my initial consultation with the surgeon as mentioned in a prior PM to you because this was not my first choice either. Little did I know, that after all my efforts and everything I went through to avoid it, in the long run I still needed to have it. Take care and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers every day. Annmarie

Thank you for asking. yes the pre-op went well except I get to wear this "bracelet" until my surgery. It is for the blood that has been typed just in case I need it. My youngest granddaughter calls it a watch. LOL My surgery is 8:00 monday morning. It seems like it took forever for the 3 weeks to get here but now it seems like all of a sudden it is here. Make sense?

It took me the last two weeks to get everything in order. My house is usually always clean but it hasn't been this organized in forever. LOL I wanted to get as much done as possible so my dh wouldn't have to do too much. No one has told me the limitations after surgery yet but I know there will be some.

How are you doing? Are you reading, scrapbooking, watching movies? Are you bored out of your mind? Has the pain stopped?

Thanks again.

I'm not sure who long you will be in the hospital for but I hope your surgery went well on Monday. I was thinking of you! I had my post-op appointment and don't want to go into too much detail here. I certainly hope everything went well and that you will be home and picking up the little ones in no time. Annmarie

Thank you! My surgery went well and i am now home (on pain pills LOL. My neck is swollen and gross to look at but I now I am on the road to recovery and that is all that matters. Take care and keep in touch.
