This September, my dh & I are taking our dd on her first trip to WDW. His family decided to come with us. In all, there are 10 of us going and dh & I are the only ones who have ever been there.

My BIL lives right outside of Miami and is driving there to meet us, we are flying from NJ. BIL calls last night and asks where he can park his car. My dh answers, "In the parking lot right outside of the hotel". BIL's response, "Wow, you said the park was big, but I didn't realize you could drive in it." We were ROTFLMAO, he thought since CBR was "in the park" a/k/a on-site Disney property. He must have thought, he was going to open the hotel door and get in line for Dumbo!!!

I'm sure this is going to be only the first of many laughs on this trip!

I had to respond to this one - that is one of the funniest comments I have heard about WDW! He obviously has no idea what's in store for him - good thing he has you around to help! (You're going to have to update us after the trip!)

I'm going with a newbie in September and it's hard to fathom that they have no concept of what WDW is like. How could they though - there's nothing else like it. Anyway, my friend Michelle (the newbie) was shocked to learn that you couldn't walk from park to park! She had assumed that we could do some of MK, then walk on over to AK, etc.. Had to clear that one up for her lol.
I am looking forward to taking a newbie though, because I think it will be fascinating to see it through her eyes.

We're going with six newbies (one of them is my three year old granddaughter, and I can't wait!) and my son who hasn't been there in 20 years.

My BIL says he's going to stay in the room the whole time because he doesn't like amusement parks. I can't wait to see his reaction! I know him well enough to know that he'll love it once we're there!

How funny! Even with reading up and planning, you just can't picture WDW until youre there!

My MIL and SIL were planning their first ever trip to the World at the same time my family was planning our first with kids. They were going first, and it was so funny to try and talk to them about it. They couldn't figure out what I was planning for...they thought I was NUTS! They planned to hop on a plane and go for it - how hard could it be? I did manage to get them to at least read about things and choose must-see's. My MIL actually thought she'd be doing lots of outside-the-world shopping and hanging around the hotel 'cause she thought she'd be BORED!

Of course they came back thrilled beyond belief and couldn't wait for my girls to go! They can't wait to PLAN next time! Now we're all planning to go together in 2005 - even dragging FIL along for the ride!

Newbies are so much fun...

LOL, thats great! :D
We are taking somwhat newbies with us next week. The parents havent been since 1986, and the kids, 4&6, have never been. Its really funny to hear my 6yo telling the other kids all the ins & outs...and I guess Im doing the same to the adults, LOL. I cant wait to see what they think of it all.

Welcome to the DIS, jennamom128. I'm very glad you found us and I hope you can visit often.

I imagine you will hear some pretty funny comments before this trip is finished. What fun.

I got tickled when one of my husband's partners told me that he and his family were going to the Magic Kingdom for 7 days. I asked if they weren't going to visit the other parks and he asked what other parks. I think they are going to have some fun surprises when they arrive :)

My best friend and her husband will be coming to FL next Feb, and we have talked them into five days at Disney!! Her hubby has never been, and it has been 16+ years since she and I went in high school.
At first when I asked her how many days she wanted to spend at Disney, she said "2" So I asked her what parks she wanted to visit in her 2 days. She replied definitely disney world and probably Universal. :D
Since then I think I have convinced her that with only FIVE days, she will not be headed to Universal. There is too much to see at WDW! I can't wait for her husband to see what my husband and I have been raving about for years. Imagine, his first time and he'll be 43!

This thread remind me of something that happened last year. I was helping a friend plan a trip to WDW last year, and we got into a huge argument about the MK and Epcot. She insisted that when she went there on her honeymoon back in the 80's that she walked from MK to Epcot and that they were side by side. I kept telling her that she couldn't have done that unless she walked several miles. Then she insisted that the Spaceship Earth was in MK and that they moved it to Epcot when it was built. No matter how I tried to tell her that she couldn't possibly be right, she insisted she was. I finally gave up and said "you're right" and just thought I'd let her find out on her own.

I thought it was too funny for words.

I had a similar situation happen with as the OP did. I am taking my mother and my best friend from high school and college down to Disney in December for the holidays. This will be their first time going and had no idea how big the place was. I went down in May and picked up one of those transportation guide maps at CSR where we were staying. I brought it back an my mom and my friend were shocked to see how big the Disney property is. My mom told me before she knew about buses, monorails, and boats, that there was no way she was gonna WALK around that place. Needless to say I was able to ease her mind. Anyway, it is a big place and its so much fun to see newbies for the first time there. I CAN'T WAIT!!!:)

Too funny! That reminded me of when our friends were headed to Disney for their very first ever trip (5 yrs ago.) she told me one night that she thought spaceship earth was Epcot....she thought everything was inside "the ball" :o I quickly straightened her out and the funny thing is they are now quite the "Disney" pros. They go almost as much as we do. I also hate it when people call the MK "Disney World". That drives me nuts! Thanks for the laugh.

For many years, my BIL would call MK "Disney World". That was a common mistake for a long time for many people. Then there is the confusion with park-hopper tickets for those that want to see Universal and now IOA. They don't understand why the park hoppers aren't good there also (and Sea World too).

We went as a family with my BIL also just recently. He went eight years ago but stayed offsite and went to MK and MGM only - one day each - drove over. Never got the sense for how big it was until this time (stayed at the Swan) and also how close some things are (walking to Epcot for example - which he dismissed at first as probably being boring, but after experiencing it found it as enjoyable as any other park). We spent some time just driving around the area - which I think is about as big as San Francisco.

No real funny stories - but it was great to see his perspective change so quickly. He wasn't technically a "newbie" but he felt like one as he learned more and more. By the end of our six days, he had it all in perspective and is anxious to go back. I think we made a real WDW fan out of him.

When I was your I used to think the same thing. :p I was thinking "Geeze, Epcot isn't worth going to, it's just a little ball with forgein beer stands." But now that I researched it I'm like :earseek: WOW! I have seen how beautiful it is and how different it is I can't wait to go.

These stories are so funny.

My DH, DD (6yo) and myself (our third trip) are taking my Mom and Step Dad along this October. I am so excited for them to experience it all. My DD talks non stop about what Mee Maw will like and how Pap will act with the princesses.

I feel like I am overwhelming my Mom with all the info I want her to know before we go. I am constantly asking what they want to plan and what they want to see. My Mom is like "I don't know, whatever you plan is fine". I am printing like crazy and giving her plenty of reading material.

I got them MNSSHP tickets to go with us on the 26th Oct and my Step Dad wanted to know what that place was that we were going to until midnight!!!!

I can't wait for them to see it all.

There was a guy I worked with that said to me..."I can't understand what you want to go there for, we saw everything there was to see in one day and you are planning a week or 2...We found it boring...!"

I then started asking him what park he went to...He said MK.

I then said "Didn't you like Splash, BTMRR, Buzz etc....?"

He just kept saying..."What was that ride...I didn't see that...Never heard of it..."

He never even opened his eyes while there...

You guys are making me nervous!! We will be going in Sept and we are newbies. However, I have been hanging around these boards and reading the guide books, so I know a little!! Anyway, I have talked to three different people at work who went to Orlando last summer. All 3 told me to go to Universal. When I replied that we we were staying at Disney all week--They asked what was the difference?? All 3 told me they had been to Disney, but in questioning them, only 1 had been anywhere near Disney. I was just SHOCKED!!!! Made me feel pretty smart!
