The poor family that the school was originally named after...wouldn't you like that to have a school named for you & then all the sudden some New guy comes along & they decide to change the name school.... so much for your legacy - it obviously doesn't matter any more.

I wonder what the mascot will be?

I think people should wait & see what kind of pres he will be before naming something for him - what if he turns out be a nutcase then they'll have to go back & rename the school again..

I agree, and I'm a pretty enthusiastic Obama supporter. To name anything for him at this point is jumping the gun in a huge way! Let him take office, see what he can accomplish, and then make the decision of whether he is worthy of such an honor.

agree--actually, I don't like anything to be named for a living president except his (or her) presidential library.

Reagan Airport is okay now, but I didn't like that we did it when he was living, same with Bush.

Just me.

This is a predominately black school. What Barack Obama has already acheived is being elected the first African-American President!
This is a tremendous accomplishment and they wish to honor him thusly.
I am sure the kind Doctor could care less..:rolleyes1

I hope this generation understands the struggles to get to this day and the pride African Americans are feeling.

Find something else to complain about, for crying out loud, the school population wanted this..

It's starting. Pretty soon all schools will be named after him.

Then, what's next?

Malls?

Highways?

Blech. Just makes me ill.

Please. This was done because the students wanted it done. These students, who are mostly minority students, have been inspired. How dare they! :sad2:

Inspired? Why would ya want to go and do that? ;)

It reminds me of election night. A lot of images of Jesse Jackson were shown with tears streaming down his face...How many know that Jesse Jackson was with Martin Luther King when he was assassinated? Can any one of us imagine the emotion he was feeling when Obama was declared winner?
I don't care if you like him or not, but people came on here and made fun of his tears...Very ignorant.

I grew up in the 60's in NYC. I wasn't isolated from the civil rights movement. I am white. I visited my Dad's birthplace, Springfield, SC and saw the whites only~ colored only bathrooms. I ate frequently at the Woolworth's lunch counter. Even worked there in High School. I didn't even realize black people could not sit at that counter.
Were all black people innocent of their own prejudices and violence? Of course not. It doesn't change the fact they were mistreated for decades.
It's a new day. It's a new beginning. Cherish it!

Jesse Jackson on election night was incredibly touching to me. :sad1:

Look at how far we've come!

It's a new day! It's a new beginning!

I think half the stuff named after Reagan was only done because he was a Hollywood actor! :rotfl:

I agree. And that just stinks for the other family.

So every school that was ever named after someone was because that person was being "worshipped"?

They change the names of schools all the time. They have changed the names of several of the schools in my home town. I don't think families who have received the past honor expect it to remain named after their loved one forever.:confused3

Maybe that family was contacted and supported the idea. Shouldn't make assumptions just because you don't agree with something.

I keep hearing over and over about being the first African American. Actually he is NOT, he is interaccial.

He is African..and he is an American. He IS an African American. He is also black..look at him why don't you?

You can be bi-racial and be blonde and fair skinned. You can have black hair and black skin. Brown eyes, hair and skin dominate in most cases. He is bi-racial. He is also black.

Naming a school after Obama at this time seems a little hasty. What if, in four years, they're faced with having to erect the "impeachment wing" or the "drummed out of office Library" or the "what went wrong? cafeteria" or the "no one is better off than they were four years ago gymnasium" or the "most corrupt presidency ever art room."

I'm just sayin' I'd wait a while. But that's just me.

In my husband's home time was a major street that was renamed for a prominent businessman and a couple of years later he was in jail for something (can't remember what). They changed it back.

It happens. Things are renamed all the time.

Personally, I think naming the school after Obama is nice. If you lived in that school district and didn't like it you could vote against it but if not, and it's what the people who live there want, I say great!

I don't understand about people getting upset about this stuff. People are happy and excited about Obama and I don't remember the last time I saw people feeling hopeful about a politician. To me that's a good thing, and preferable to everyone just feeling blah and not caring about anything.

So, would this mean you think the people the school was previously name for were also worshipped? I mean really, so what?

Eh, big deal.
The school board voted (unanimously) for it.
