I'm looking for some tools to help my younger son with his reading and writing over the summer and would love some recommendations!

I'm a sahm so have time to work with him on this. he's in kindy now, will be in first grade in the fall. he's doing okay, is really working on sounding out and reading on his own, but I can see the difference between his twin sister and him. she is much more on par with their classmates.

any suggestions?

Starfall.com is a very good sight for that age (and free).
Remember that kids develop differently though and pushing him to be where his sister is can be hard for him.

My kids enjoyed the Jump Start and Reader Rabbit computer games at that age. Kids are 16 and nearly 11 now, so I'm sure there are others out there now.

thanks everyone!

also, I didn't mean to come off that I am pushing him to be where his sister is, and I can see how my post did seem that way. I realize kids develop differently...my eldest son taught himself to read at 3 and has always been far above his grade level. my daughter is probably smack in the middle of her grade level. I am just hoping to help my son gain some confidence and encourage learning. his teacher and I were talking today and she was wondering if I wanted her to recommend him for a title 1 camp they have in july at our school, and to be honest it really won't fit into our summer and I'd like to avoid it if possible. I will definitely do it if I feel like I can't give him some of the help he would get there, but I believe that if I have some good tools and put in the time with him I can do at least as well for him.

keep the suggestions coming. I can't believe summer will be here soon!

Reader Rabbit and Jump Start are still around and great fun for kids. The are learning and dont even realise it :thumbsup2

My DS6 Kinderarten teacher uses and encourages parents to use the starfall.com site.

Also, nick jr.com and playhouse disney .com are great sites and you can print worksheets/activities off of them. Also, you can buy or make flash cards and workbooks with themes to keep kids interested and having fun

headsprout.com

It does have a fee but my dd has been doing the reading comprehension part and has increased her scores a lot. I couldn't be happier. There is a phonics part that would be perfect for a soon to be 1st grader.
