I am planning a short vacation for when I graduate from college. It would be early May next year. My question is simple... Where should I say?

Should I stay onsite, or in an hotel near the resort? Keep in mind I would be flying so I wont have a car.

If you can afford it, STAY ON SITE!!!! It's SOOO worth the extra money. Besides, you'll deserve it. I stayed at DL hotel back in 1990, but not since. Not because I didn't like it, my family and I just couldn't afford it. Back in 2005 I stayed at PP and liked it. In two weeks we're staying at the Grand Californian. I've never stayed there, so I'm really excited about it. If you're not able to stay on site, I once stayed at Howard Johnson and really liked it. :thumbsup2

Well, I want to spend at least four days in the parks and I need to fly there and back; thus, I need to kind of keep it simple and cheap. Does any of the onsite hotels compare to a Walt Disney World value resort?

If not, I hear that there is a string of hotels just across the street and within walking distance to the parks. Is this true?

It is true. We have stayed onsite once, and offsite numerous times. What works best for you depends on your priorities. I would stay onsite again, and wanted to last month, but DLR hotels are not setup for families of six very well. So we stayed on Harbor.

There is some advice and useful links in this thread:

Here is some unsolicited advice in that it appears you are a WDW vet.

There are several hotels on Harbor very close to the crosswalk. We've stayed at the Desert Inn, Anaheim Plaza, and the Tropicana. All three were decent enough places.

Desert Inn is the closest. The room was clean and fairly quiet. They do have their rates for next year posted now (at least through March - $89/nt deluxe).

Anaheim Plaza is the farthest walk of the three and my least favorite of the three as well. The shower next door was loud as was the maid's cart. I can't tell if they have rates up or not, but I don't think they do. The site tells me there's no rooms available no matter what dates I put in for 2008.

My DD stayed at the Tropicana on a school trip. They always stay there. We collected her things from her room on their last day so I was able to see inside. It was decent and as clean as possible after two nights with 4 teenage girls. They have their rates posted for next year as well.

A lot of people like the Best Western Park Place.

Thanks!!! I will get back with you after I read the material :)

The DL hotels are more in the upper end compared to WDW, based on budget, I would plan on staying in one of the nearby hotels. I have been going to DL for 42 years now and have yet to stay onsite.
