Help with UY-newbie

Good morning,

I have been reading these forums for quite some time and my husband and I are ready to start seriously shopping for DVC points. I've found a resale contract at the 'home' resort that we want but I am still confused about what would be the best use year for us. This contract has an August use year. We are anticipating vacationing sometime between October and December.
I would so appreciate someone explaining in VERY simple terms to me if this would work well for us.

In a perfect world you want a contract whose UY is as close to the intending vacation month as possible. August would work for either Oct/Dec.

The importance is this: While UY doesnt really effect when you can make a ressie, if in the event you had to cancel a booked trip within the last 4 months of a UY, the points then become distressed, as you can't bank those points into the following year.
