I ran/walked the Princess in March. My 2nd toe toenail turned purple and was incredibly sore. Well, it has separated from ymtoe, but it looks like there is still some nail inderneath it. It is only attached on the sides. I am waiting for it to come off on it's own.

My problem is that my 2nd toe on both feet hurt so much when I walk or run. I am wondering if it's my socks? My shoes aren't too small that I can tell.

What should I do? New socks? Sneakers?

If you have plenty of rroom in your toe box for youtr toe ot expand, get some Injinji socks. With those, I ran the marathon adn several half's this year blister free for teh first time this year! I've had teh exact same problem as you. Injinji's are the kind with individual toes. They solved dh's blister issues too. HTH!

Sounds like "black toenail" that runners/walkers can suffer from with out proper fitting shoes/socks. I found the following paragraph in an article I was reading...

Your running or walking shoes and socks must fit correctly. Your feet swell a full shoe size over the course of a longer run or walk, and your toes must have someplace to expand into. The toebox must be wide enough, yet not too wide or your toes will bang around in it. Getting fit at a technical running shoe store in your area is your best method of ensuring your shoes fit correctly.

I was having all kinds of problems when I first started running until I took myself to a running store and was fitted for the proper running shoes. I haven't looked back since. Best investiment I ever made! Hope this information helps. BTW, you will keep on getting black toenails over and over again if you do not fix the problem.:thumbsup2

You also need to make sure your laces are tied tightly enough. With loose laces, your feet can slide around more, giving them more opportunity to get jammed against the sides and front of the toe box.

Definitely make sure the fit is okay. When you run and are about to come off the toe, the shoe is actually pulled toward your toes (not sure I can explain this well). The distance between your toes and end of shoe goes away in a hurry. Make sure you have at least a thumbs width from the end of toe to the shoe.

Also, keep the toe nails trimmed. If they snag any, they will repeated pull over your run.

If your shoes have been fit by experts at a running store then check the sock situation- also make sure to trim nails and make sure there are no "hidden snags". I developed this problem with my first pair of shoes (6 years ago) and have now (finally) run 2 halfs without having an issue. My problem was the toe nail hung on for a long time (I just had regular "water" blisters under my nail) and became misshapen causing the injury to renew itself every time I did a long distance. Taping it down, lots of body glide and keeping the "old" nail trimmed back as far as I could have finally put me right.

I often had to just paint my toe when I wore sandals so everything looked ok.
