Help with setting suggestions?

Guys and Gals,

As some of you are aware, I recently upgraded to a T2i with kit lens and a 55-250 lens. I have been playing and experimenting slightly, but mostly I have been just trying to get used to handling the equipment using the Auto settings. So.......

I will be shooting a Pro Baseball game soon, and was wondering what settings you would suggest for me to try. The game will start around 7 pm eastern time, so the sun will be up, but setting, and the game will go into the night.

I'm not sure of the lighting at Turner Field, but I recently shot an Angels-White Sox (go Sox) at the Cell. I used a 70-200, shooting @ f2.8 with ISO @ 400 with a shutter speed of 250 and got pretty good results. That was at the darkest part of the night. I used shutter priority.Because the 50-250 is not a real fast lens, I would recommend boosting your ISO. Better to have a little noise than blur. Here are a couple from that night.

I'd go at it using shutter priority (I'd probably settle around 1/500 with the tele zoom you've got, just to make sure I was covered at the long end), and let the aperture fall where it may. Check the exposure and if it's too dark bump up the ISO as needed.

I use the 55-250 to shoot night baseball games quite a bit, and this is exactly what I do. Keep in mind that it'll get harder to get sharp shots as you lose light, so start shooting right off the bat!

Great shots! Must have had really good seats too!

PS, what camera do you have? If you ever get seats like that again, consider getting a 400mm fixed from borrowlenses.com I did that to shoot some HS football games last year and it was AWESOME. I just wish I had a better camera body (I have a 300D) that could have kept up with the lens.

Thanks. We were lower box around row 14. I was using my Sigma 70-200 f2.8 on my Pentax K10D. The DW and I both have K10's. We have been shooting Pentax for many years going back to film. Our SLR was a Pentax LX.

I used to use Av for almost all my shooting, but recently I've been getting really good results using Manual and Auto ISO. I set the aperture what I want it to be, the shutter speed I need for the scene, and let my T2i pick the best ISO for the scene. It's been pretty useful.

For a baseball game, I'd pick a wide aperture (as wide as your 55-250 goes, or maybe stopped down just a little short of wide-open) and a shutter speed of at least 1/250 ... let the camera handle the ISO....

Also, I'd suggest center-weighted or spot metering....
