help with nyc

I have two questions:

1- I'd like to use points to spend a night in Manhattan. Has anyone stayed at the Shelburne and/or the Loews, the two hotels in Manhattan? Is one better than the other?

2- I might end up my use year with a handful of extra points that have to b used by Aug. 31. Is anyone collecting extra points to give to charity? Do people usually just let those expire?

I have never stayed in either!!
But I do live and work in NYC if you PM me I will give you an e-mail adress and will answer any questions about the areas they are in...
