How do you solve this question...
Two houses for sale. The second house is 1,000 sq ft less than twice the sq ft of the first house. Together the houses add to 4400 sq ft. How many sq ft in the first house

I have no idea what the formula would be, but I believe house #1 is 1800 sq ft and house #2 is 2600 sq ft. I just tried several combinations until I found one that fit the equation.

House 1 is X square feet.
House 2 is 2x-1000
House 1 and House 2 total 4400.

So,

X + (2x-1000)=4400
X + 2x - 1000=4400
3X - 1000 = 4400
3X = 4400+1000
3X=5400
X=1800

2X-1000=(2*1800)-1000=3600-1000=2600

Therefore, house 1 is 1800 sq feet and house 2 is 2600 sq feet

So, T*Bird has it right (I just provided the equations)

I get 1800 as the answer:

4400= x + 2x-1000

add 1000 to 4400

5400=x+2x
5400=3x
5400/3=1800
Therefore x=1800

I'm stuck on how to set up these kinds of problems - I have the answers - but i'm studying for a test tomorrow & I need to learn it - not look at the anaswers without know how to do it.

I have another more....

The bulldogs won twice as many games as they lost. If they played a total of 36 games, how many did they win? (ans 24)

AND...

Sylvia scored 10 pts betterh than Wiley on their science exam. Greg scored 6pts less than Wiley . Altogehter the students earned 226 pts. How many points did Sylvia earn?

Did the equations I gave help? Trying writing it out with Xs. For example:

Bulldogs have won X games. Since they've won twice as many as they've lost, they lost 1/2X games. To make it easier, let's flip this: The Bulldogs have lost X games. Since they've won twice as many as they've lost, they've won 2X games.

So: Wins=2X and loses=X

Wins+loses=total number of games
2X + X = 36
3X=36 (add up the Xs)
X=12 (divide both sides by 3)

Wins = 2X
= 2*12
=24

They won 2 times more than they lost. So they won 2x, and lost x.

So, it is 2x + x = 36.

2x + x = 3x.

So, 3x = 36.

Divide 36 by 3, you get 12.

Plug 12 in for x, you get 2(12) + 12 = 36.

24 + 12 = 36.

36=36

Does this help?

thanks - for the first one - I was adding too many variables - I was making each house a variable :confused3

Okay - how to set them up. You want to be able to solve for X, and then plug that value in to find the number you're looking for. In your first problem, X is Wiley's score, because the scores of the others are given in relation to his.

So Wiley's score is X
Greg's score is X - 6
Sylvia's score is X + 10

So X + (x-6) + (x+10) = 226
3X + 4 = 226
3X = 222
X = 74

So Wiley made 74, Sylvia made 84, and Greg made a 68.

In the second problem, you have the games the Bulldogs lost as X, and the number they won is 2X.

So 2X + X = 36
3X = 36
X = 12

So they won 24 games and lost 12.

Does that help?

You cannot have more variables than you have equations. All the examples you've shown us have one equation (you have one total), so need one variable.

As a hint, for the other example you have, use Wiley's points as your X (or W). Define Sylvia and Greg by how much more/less they scored than Wiley.

House 1 is X square feet.
House 2 is 2x-1000
House 1 and House 2 total 4400.

So,

X + (2x-1000)=4400
X + 2x - 1000=4400
3X - 1000 = 4400
3X = 4400+1000
3X=5400
X=1800

2X-1000=(2*1800)-1000=3600-1000=2600

Therefore, house 1 is 1800 sq feet and house 2 is 2600 sq feet

right on

okay - I see...on the baseball one I had just 2x+36 - I didn't have the x representing the losses. ACK!

I always recommend that students write out (in sentence form) what the equations are (shoving in Xs).

So:
Wins + Loses = Total Games
2x + X = 36

That way, you'd see that you were missing the X representing loses.

Also, I find it easier to use a letter than has some meaning (rather than an X). So, I'd use L (for loses), just to remind me what I was using as my reference (so at the end, I wouldn't think that X represented the wins).
