My DD16 is entering her junior year of high school and does not know what she wants to major in for college. I was thinking there must be some web sites that could help her if she plugs in her intrests and strengths, etc. Does anyone know of a site that we could check? She is a beautiful singer and also loves children but does not think she should be in education necessarily and I dont know what she can do with her vocal training. Thanks so much for the help.

What about becoming a vocal teacher ? I think 16 is rather young to know what you want to do for the rest of your life. But saying that, colleges want to know what your major is. The first two years of college is basic courses. She should begin visiting colleges and talking to people. It's always best to try and find something you love and then figure out a way to get paid for it !

Here's something that might be helpful
Choosing a major/career

Does she want to do something with her voice? I agree that it's probably hard to make a career of it. DS is a music performance major, and we had all the talks about "What are you going to do? Maybe you should go into music education, something more practical." However, he's now going for his master's degree (still in music performance), worked in entertainment at DL one summer, has done free lance "gigs" in the DFW area, and overall is very happy (and not totally broke). Who knows if he made the right decision, but he's doing what he wants-on his nickel. And he's come to us and thanked us for letting him pursue his dream without giving him a lot of hassle-that's priceless! It's hard when the son of 2 engineers does something impractical, career-wise, but if your DD has a passion for singing, think about it.

Maybe she could look up some career info. on the internet. She does not have to declare a major the first year of college so she has some time. She can explore some elective couses and maybe get an idea that way.

As an academic advisor at a college, I can tell you that MANY MANY students who enter with a DEFINITE major in mind change it in the first year. There are so many options now that it is hard to grasp them all - most students take a class or two and find a connection - to a person or idea - and that sparks for them and they follow that path.

Having said that, I recommend mymajors.com as a good site to give some feedback based on areas of interest.

Good luck!

Terri
