Our kitchen is going to be very similar to the layout in the link below, particularly the left side of the kitchen. My question is this - the floor plan shows the upper cabinets going all way down to the peninsula. I'm thinking I wouldn't like this as the sink area would not feel open enough. I'm thinking of stopping the upper cabinets just before the sink and then moving the stove down to center it with the remaining upper cabinets. Do you think this would look right? Do you have any other suggestions?

I've been in a house where the cabinets did this, and it was fine. It was very open. One thing that I know that will help with openness is how high will your ceiling be? The higher the ceiling, the more open especially for the kitchen. Having a corner sink is great. Also another thing to consider is how tall your cabinets will be and how far apart between the bottom of the cabinet and the countertops. Beautiful house, have fun building!!

I just spent $60k on maple cabinets and am not happy

I have cabinets over my peninsula and they are difficult to reach easily. The one on the very end is especially bad because of how the door opens. Wish I'd been thinking like you are. Another thing to consider - my sister had a similar dishwasher placement. When the dishwasher door was open, it completely blocked access to the kitchen.

My friend bought a house that had cabinets over the *****ula. First thing she did was remove them. It looks so much better now.

EDIT: I guess I didn't spell peninsula right!! :rotfl2:

oops!!

So, you're thinking that it's fine the way it is?? The ceilings will be at least 9', possibly 10' in the kitchen. I'm just worried about the cabinet basically being to my close to my head when I'm standing at the sink. If I stand in one of the corners in my current kitchen where the sink would be, the cabinets would be way too close. Of course, that's not taking into account the angle of the countertop, so I guess I would be further away from the cabinet with the kitchen like it is in the floorplan. It's so hard trying to design this houseplan. Every other house we've built, we've been able to walk through a model first. This one is completely custom, and it's just so hard for me to visualize all of this.

:scared: Don't tell me stuff like that!! I'll never get up the nerve to start building this house!

The upper cabinets don't actually go over the peninsula too. The ones on the left wall just go all the way down to the end - not turning - just stopping at the end (like the bar stool side). I'm just wondering if I don't want to stop them before the sink and then leaving all of that area, the sink/peninsula, all of that open.

I was concerned about the dishwasher door placement too. We made the island a little smaller - there's 4 foot between the peninsula cabinet and the island. So, when the dishwasher door is open, there's still about a foot to a foot and a half to get by. My architect and I "tested" it out at her house with her dishwasher, and I'm comfortable with it.

Sorry - guess I didn't explain myself very well. :) See above post - does that make more sense? I'm just thinking that having those cabinets to the left of me by the sink might annoy me.

I hope they were gold plated maple. :earseek: We just built a new house and granted our kitchen is not HUGE and it is by no means SMALL, but I paid $11k for cherry and love them.

Okay, I'm feeling better now. :) I like the look of the cherry too. Haven't completely decided because I really like the maple as well.

Someone on another forum (homebuilding forum) mentioned that if I did stop the upper cabinets where I'm thinking, that the wall would look really bare. I agree, that's where my dilemna lies. Any other suggestions?

Okay - I think I get it now. Can you end the line of cabinets with shelves? And then you can hang a picture on the wall, then it wouldn't be bare. Or have the cabinets around the sink higher?

Sounds like you need to walk around some cabinet showrooms before you make a decision. Good luck!

:)

My husband is in sales for a local homebuilder. It is tough to build a house without seeing it first. Without totally knowing the dimensions and seeing it for yourself, then it is a tough decision. I thought that maybe you could move the sink to where the stve is and if there is room, put the cooktop on the island and vent to the outside or buy one of those beautiful vent-a hoods. There is lots of ways to customize that kitchen. Good luck, whatever you decide!!!
