Okay, so for the last couple of weeks, I have been looking at a couple different places to stay in LA. Everytime I think I find something worth staying at, I go to tripadvisor.com and learn the truth about the place. My problem is I am trying to find something that isn't too expensive, as I am travelling solo. I was originally looking at hostels, but am having no luck in the LA area. I want safe accomodations in a safe neighborhood - but it seems that the cost of doing this is through the roof! I don't mean to be cheap, but being a full-time student makes it hard on the wallet to travel in luxury. I would rather save my money for places like DL and for souvenires.

So, my question is, can someone please recommend somewhere for me to stay that won't take my piddly months income to stay at? I have decided to rent a car after realizing that California is somewhere where you need one, so really, distance is no factor. I was thinking of the HoJo, but how far is this to other attractions (i.e.: Universal)? and would I be able to get a great rate for the end of August? Any recommendations on how to go and get great rates (i.e.: websites)?

Sorry everyone to keep asking all of these questions, but I am hoping to go without hurting the wallet. I have done it in Florida and am hoping to do better in California!

Thanks, Jo

PS: Does anyone know anything about the Fullerton area?

I remember there's a local (LA) hostel called American Youth Hostel or American International Youth Hostel. That's all the info I have....

Good luck in your google..sorry I can't help you more.

honestly, all the hostels in LA look horrible. I love staying at hostels, as I tend to meet so many wonderful people from around the world, but the hostels in LA look horrible. The reviews on them sound awful! The only promising place didn't have locks on their doors, so things could get stolen! Anyways, my hope was to stay somewhere for the whole stay in LA or surrounding area.
