On our trip in September, we received some Disney Magic due to an issue with service. We were offered a refund of over $1000.00 and were told that Disney would post a Cheque to us in Australia.

We thought nothing more of it, and last week we received a Cheque from Disney World Services, however when I went to cash it, no banks in Australia accept international cheques anymore.
So who/where do I contact to make this a bank deposit into my account? I have 180 days before the Cheque is no longer valid. I’m not sure who to contact and as it’s not a small amount, I don’t want to disregard it. This was originally organized by the Grand California Guest Services. Any advice would be appreciate. Thank you.

Hmmmm, that's a bit tricky from what I can see. Is it possible to contact Disney and have them send another form of payment (like an electronic transfer)? Or could you possibly open an online US account and deposit it that way, then transfer the money into PayPal or something?

I would either contact Disney customer service or the GCH hotel (but even though they were the original organizers I would think they would refer you back to guest services as well). You may have to insist on bumping up the help request to higher levels but For $1000 the effort would be worth the time IMO. Good luck.

You don't have to give details if you don't want to but just curious on what the issue was that they would offer $ 1000 to compensate for.

You need to provide a Social Security number or Taxpayer Identification number to open up an online account at a US bank, in person or online. It's to prevent money laundering.

I wonder if an online checking account would accept it? Some banks only bank online may have more flexible deposit rules?

I had a similar thought. I sometimes send money to a friend in Canada through PayPal. I'm given the option to convert it to Canadian dollars. I wondered if PayPal or an online bank might accept the deposit it and convert it. I don't know whether or not you could get cash that way, but you could at least use it to pay other things, maybe?

Many bank accounts can only accept one type of currency. You can’t deposit US dollars into an account that holds British pounds without some service to convert it first. Can you create a new bank account for just US dollars? Then use that account when you travel?

Oh golly, trying to think this through as former expat … but we always had a U.S. bank account… We could deposit foreign cheques to PayPal or interact (Canada)… is there a payment app you could deposit it to? You would pay an exchange fee (ugh, the worst), but better than nothing.

Only other option I could think of would be asking for a credit toward a future stay - but seeing that this was a refund for a bad experience might not be what is desired.

Czardas, I really hope that Disney will find a way to get the money to you in AUD, but if not, do you have any good friends in the States? You could send the check to them (via registered mail!) and have them deposit it and then transfer the money to you via PayPal or another online method that makes conversion easy.
