I would try to head out around 5:30 AM or so, traffic is lighter than later in the morning, but traffic is well known to happen anywhere in the Southland. In fact our local morning news broadcasters have special Traffic reporters, and my cable companies has a specific Traffic channel (something like the Weather Channel).
I would turn on channel 5 on the TV in your hotel room when I first get up, and pay attention to the reports.
If you have a traffic app or a GPS map with traffic, that helps to give alternatives routes if needed. Just remember, it is against the law for the driver of a vehicle to have a smartphone in their hands. So let a passenger help you, or get a special hands free mount so you can see the screen.
Also, the two main traffic reports on radio are 1070 AM and 640 AM, as part of their news/talk programming.
