Disney is trying to get away from guests booking reservations for others. They don't want reservations sold. They didn't like it when another website had "angels" calling. I know that's not what you're doing but I think you may have better luck just trying to cancel. Give them your reason. If they won't bend then ask if you can just transfer your reservation to another guest.
What meal is it? If it's something like the CP package you might be able to pick up your tickets and just give them to the other party.
