HELP! Transferred points to a member and they did not retain my use year! UPDATED

I'm not sure what to do here.... I transferred points to a member and they have a December '06 use year. My points are March '06. They tried to make an October reservation and Member Services stated they did not have any '06 points to use.....

I will be calling them in the morning but I thought transferred points were to retain their original use year. Any help would be so appreciated.... neither of us wants the hassle to reverse this transaction.

This happened to me. I have an April use year and a friend has August. I wanted to make a reservation for April 2004. She transferred some of her August 2003 points to me, so they should be current year for April 2004. No, member services said they became April 2003 and had to be banked to be used in April 2004. They did it but it took a day to process. Luckily I was able to still get the reservation I wanted. I'm sure you will be able to work this out. So did what did they become? December 06?

Transferred points are SUPPOSED to retain their resort and use year, but apparently the DVC computers are unable to actually accomplish that feat. They can fix it, but they'll have to do a manual override.

Have the other DVC owner (the points are in their account, and only they can do anything about them) call MS and ask them to straighten it out. Shouldn't be a biggie.

They did become December '06 points. I'm really surprised they would take on the recipients use year, especially when DVC is strict on banking and borrowing. I now understand why some on the rent/trade board want to know if points sold as distressed are transferable. They could use the transferred points for several more months than the the original owner. They could also bank them.

Hope this works out for both of us. Will let you know the outcome.

There is nothing that you can do at this point- they are no longer your points. There is no way to "reverse" the transaction as transferring is an irreversible transaction (and I'm sure MS stated that fact when the transfer was accomplished).

The new "owner" of those points will need to call MS and have them manually track the home resort and Use Year for the points. It sounds as though they "should" have been transferred into the other member's 2005 Use Year though (and that needed to be clarified BEFORE competing the transfer). When doing a transfer it is important to specifiy the Use Year into which they need to eb transferred. Generally, 2006 UY points may only be transferred into a 2006 UY (which is exactly what was done in this case).

I'd advise the other member to take the point with MS as you have no status regarding those points any longer. Hopefully, they will be able to convince MS to allow them to use the points as they intended.

Yep. That is the huge and, IMHO, very unfair loophole in the transfer policy that I have spoken about on other thread.

It sounds to me like the points went where they were supposed to, because right now it's December's 2005 use year, they don't enter 2006 until December of this year. since you had 2006 points, they went into his 2006 use year. The owner should know how his December contract works--he wanted 2005 points if he wanted to make reservations now. There is nothing you can do about this, the renter will have to work with MS to figure it all out, but this is my guess as to what happened.

I traded pts with someone who had a December contract, and I had to wait 7 months to get the pts, because of the problem that December people are about a year behind in getting their pts!

Thanks everyone... will have to see what happens tomorrow. Member Services did not say anything about the transfer being final or anything else that would have concerned me about the transfer. I don't think the points should be able to take on someone else's use year - they should retain their original status. I can't use them at a later date - why should someone else be able to? That just doesn't seem right - a big loophole that really should be addressed. It's unfair to all members.

(Just to add, Cruella if I'm correct - you traded with someone who had a December contract so it seems right you have to wait. The person who received my transfer has a December contract but I have a March so she shouldn't have to wait to use my '06 points, only hers. I would have to wait until December if I received a transfer from her - at least that's way I would interpret it .)

No, transfered points may be banked but not borrowed.

This, suprise (for me at least) has been a constant mantra from MS Advisors!

Just a follow up... Member Services did change the status of these points in the system. I also think we will see some changes down the line based on her conversation with Member Services as they are aware of this problem. In my on line account it does state these transferred points are for March 06 - Feb. '07.
