Hello,

DH and I are planning on donating to the food bank this weekend and need some ideas on getting the most for our $. Some of the items most needed are:
Tuna, Mac & Cheese, Cereal, Rice, Beans, Chili, PB, Canned Soups, Canned Meats, Boxed Meals and Pop Top Food Items.
Looking for help from the experts :)

I help at a food pantry here twice a month. They usually only give out 14-15 items each time. Some of the things they give out are: cereal, tuna, spaghetti sauce, noodles, hamburger helper, canned fruit, canned veggies, beans, mac n cheese, soup, ramen noodles. Sometimes they can get a deal and hand out hot dogs, hamburger, and chickens. We also get bagels from Einsteins every week. We used to get Panera every Friday, but they stopped helping out the community around here.

Our local food bank has said that actually CASH is the best thing to donate. With cash, they can buy food in bulk from Second Harvest and stretch the money a lot further. If I remember correctly they said that the $3 box of cereal you buy can buy at least 4 or 5 boxes of cereal if they had the $3 cash instead. Of course people feel more like they are doing something if they buy food.

That said, I never go into the grocery store without putting a few items in the food pantry barrel anyway. I usually buy whatever is on the 10 for $10 sales. I also frequently buy BABY FOOD, the ones that come in the square plastic containers rather than glass jars. Another thing that I do is frequently add a cake mix and container of frosting (which I have been told is nice because they make a point to give a family the cake mix and frosting if they know there is a child's birthday in the coming week or two).

My local food bank has a blurb in the paper every week with a list of 'things we need right now' and I always try to buy whatever is on the list (among the things that seem to be listed frequently are laundry detergent, toothpaste and toothbrushes, peanut butter, canned chicken, chili, soup, tuna or other canned meats and fishes.) Our supermarket frequently has the laundry detergent buy one get two free, so I always toss three bottles of laundry detergent when that happens.

Our church is actually doing a fundraiser for local food bank. If we give cash, they can purchase 1 pound of food for 18 cents! Much cheaper than we can purchase it at the store.

Wow I wonder how they get that deal, I do the grocery shopping for our church(we donate it all to a local food pantry)

We spend $50 a month and I only buy what matches up on sale with coupons (i have a few people who give me their extras) each week instead of going and doing one big shopping trip I buy a little each week and everyone at our church is so impressed that I can get so much for our money.

I usually average about 15 pretty full bags a month.
