Considering a stay at DL next year as we have been to WDW 10+ times now. At WDW we don't hire a car - we use Disney buses. With DL, I don't have a clue however - is it walkable to both parks and DTD or do they have buses? Also I checked out the prices of the Disney hotels - yikes!!! I wondered about an off site hotel as I have read on here that you can still walk to the parks - we are not offsite fans but needs must if it means getting there.

We will be staying probably 14 nights - in Florida we have done 2 centres before - split stay between Disney and Universal and I wondered if this might be possible in California without a car - what's the distance and how much in a cab? We thought it might be good to visit the beach or perhaps Hollywood - as you can see I am clueless when it comes to distances:rolleyes1

Any advice you can give me when making these tentative plans would be greatly appreciated.

First, lingo, lingo. ;) DL is a theme park. DLR is Disneyland Resort. So you want to visit DLR. :)

A car will get in your way at DLR. One of the big advantages at DLR over WDW is the walking distance hotels. There are at least a dozen of them - some Disney, some not. See the links in this short thread:

"HydroGuy's Hotel Rule" www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1199862

At DLR you can walk everywhere. Parks, DTD, hotels, restaurants.

Universal Studios is 30-40 miles away from DLR. There are beaches 10-15 miles away. Newport, Huntington and Laguna are all good choices. If you go in the summer. If not, the water will be way too cold to go in. In non-summer you could go for the view or food, but not the sand and beach except for wading maybe.

It is possible to use buses to get to the beach. Have never done it. If it was me I would rent a car. There are shuttle services to Universal. Hopefully someone else can provide a link.

This link gets lots of mileage around here:

Thank you so so much - sorry for the blip on DL/DLR lingo - told you I was a novice - your links are really useful - saved them in my favorites. Really don't like driving in places I don't know particularly 'abroad' so here's hoping that someone can provide a link to Universal shuttles or advise me how much a cab might cost.

Everyone does it at first. When you start saying DLR you will sound like you know your way around. :goodvibes
