Help please in planning re:DL and Universal!

Hi again! Another "days of the week" question for ya'll. We are arriving on Wed Sept 21 at 10:45 am and leave Wed. September 28 at 7:00 pm. We have a 6 day park hopper and a 1 day pass for Universal. Any suggestions re: when to activate the PH passes and when to go to Universal to minimize crowds there? We thought maybe we would not go to the parks on the first day (downtown Disney stroll?) and start fresh Thursday Sept 22. We could go to the parks for awhile on the last day before we head to LAX. I had originally thought we would go to Universal on the weekend when DL/CA is busier but, of course, US will be busier. Since we have 6 days in the parks and only one day at US, would a week day there make more sense and which day would be best? Sorry this is so long and thanks for any help from you experienced people!!!!

We did US on a Friday and it was busy..but workable.Many characters were out. We had FOTL passes and they worked great. The Mummy had 105 minute wait at 1400 in the afternoon. You can easily do it in a day. One hr 15 min drive from Anaheim to North Hollywood. Great time.
Did 4 daqys in the parks and shopping..needed one more, but we were greedy. Used the fASTPASS system and rode everything as many times we wanted.
